Catherine Gaines Hill dau. of Robert Hill and Martha Fleming Gaines, b.10/9/1804 d.3/15/1881, was raised by her aunt, Elizabeth Herndon Gaines Miller who died aged 87 leaving no children of her own. Catherine m. Samuel Peachy Ryland, son of Josiah Ryland and Katherine Peachy of "Farmington", King and Queen Co. They lived in Norwood, "King and Queen Co." Catherine and Samuel had 11 children:

2. Josiah Ryland b.1/17/1830 d.xxxx m. 1st Callie Thomas and had Callie Ryland (well known writer). He m. 2nd Julia Dean Wortham, no children.
3. Elizabeth Herndon Ryland b.5/20/1832 m. on 11/18/1858 Augustus Sizer of "Millwood", King & Queen Co., VA.
4. Martha Fleming Ryland b.2/9/1834 d.5/17/1896, not married.
5. Charles Hill Ryland, DD b.1/22/1836 d.7/1914 m. 10/28/1869 Alice Marion Garnett, dau. of Dr. John Muscoe Garnett of "Lanefield", King & Queen Co.. Dr. Ryland was for many years Secretary-Treasurer of Richmond College. They had 7 children:
