James Patton Preston b.6-21-1774 d.5-4-1843, ninth child of Col. Wm Preston and Susanna Smith, was born at "Smithfield". He married Miss Nancy Taylor of Norfolk, Va. on June 13, 1801. He was a member of the State Senate of Virginia, a Colonel in the U.S. Army and the 21st Governor of Virginia (1816-1819). They had 6 children:

1. William Ballard Preston b.11-29 (25?)-1805 d.11-16-1862 married Miss Lucy Redd on Nov. 28, 1839. He was a member of the Virginia Conventions of 1850 and 1860, a member of the Congress from Virginia in 1847-1849, Secretary of the Navy in the Cabinet of President Zachariah Taylor, 1849-1850 and Senator in the Confederate Congress. They had 6 children:
• Walter Redd Preston b.4-27-1841 d.8-1-1872 married on 2-19-1866 Miss Harriet Jane Milling Means b.3-8-1846 d.3-24-1869. Harriet was from Columbia SC and she was the 7th child of Edward Means and Claudia Hart. Claudia was the first child of Benjamin Hart 1776-1853 and Mary Sally.
• Anne (Nannie) Taylor Preston b.2-1843 d.7-1868 married Dr. Walter Coles of Albemarle, Va. and they had 4 children:
