Note about the chords -

I'll try to notate these songs mostly in G but some may be done in other keys.  Most sing songs will have the key chosen by the vocalist.  For instance, I can't sing some songs in G, they don't make a pair of vice grips that will squeeze tight enough, so I have to sing 'em in D or E, sorry banjos.  In fact, Will the Circle is most comfortable to me in F.  Cripple Creek and Old Joe Clark are mostly done in A but a banjo player by himself might play em in G.  (You know the one about the banjo player who left his car unlocked with his banjo in the back seat?  He ran outside to check it and someone had left another banjo...)

Of course, this is getting very old very quickly.  Remember I told you I can't sing in G?  That means lots of the chords I wrote above are "wrong", cause I sing it in D, not G.  So what is a poor bluegrass picker to do?  "OH, NO!  My paper is in G but he's doing it in D.  I CANT PLAY!" And "DEE!!!!??????  That song's not in DEEEEE!!!!!!"

Well now don't despair, this is a piece of cake.   Here is a sample from my book entitled "Music Theory for Bluegrass Players"

    • Basic lesson
    • Chords are 1 through 8
    • example- GABCDEFG, 12345678
    • Most songs are 1 4 5 or a variation of that progression.  Some throw in a 6 or a 2 and you'll find a 7 or 3.
    • If a song is a 1 5 1 song it'll probably have a 4 in there somewhere, but not always.
    • Take any song above and substitute the number for the letter and you'll know how to write any song.
    • The 5 is the turn-around chord, so that means a 1 5 1 song is always turning around.. (it's a dance song, get it?)
    • When you want to end a verse or chorus, do a 5 chord (most famous in rock-n-roll)
    • Bluegrassers love to mess you up with 1 5 1 songs, keep your eye out for 'em!
    • If you're trying to play a song and it's not a 1, a 4, or a 5, try a 2.
    • Swing and jazz use a 1 6 2 5 turn around, but now we're getting fancy.
    • Transposing (very simplfied, major key)
    • To transpose a song from G to D, substitute the numbers for the chords, using a 1 on all Gs, and the correct count on the other chords (see example above, a C is a 4, GABC, 1234).
    • Put a D on all the 1s
    • Count and replace as per the example, with D=1.  A 4 becomes a DEFG, G, where it was a C before (GABC)
    • For purists - don't forget to have a half-step between the 3 & 4 and 7 & 8.  This is where sharps and flats come in. (See Old Home Place above, there's no black key between E & F so you have to sharp the F... Ha!, that's in Chapter 2)
    • Don't believe anything I've written here, but try it for yourself, then buy my book (but wait, that's not all!  You also get...)
    • Now send $485 for the cost of lessons you just saved to 666 Rippemoff St. Suckersville, MD - Just kidding!
