Chapter I
“I looked at the Golden Hall shining in the last rays of the sun. Soon it would be dark and I would get to go inside and warm myself over the fire. There was more work to be done since my father died when the Uruks tried to cross the fjords of Isen. I was proud of my dad but also sad for his death but In Rohan we were more used to death than other people (although it was still very painful).” After my father died my mother grew grim and smiled rarely. She would say over and over that I was the man of the house and had to provide for my little brother’s and sisters. I finished my work and went inside to rest for the next day of hard work.
I woke at the sound of the rooster crow. There would be more work to be done. I sighed and went to the small kitchen to eat some cold porridge. After I ate my meager meal I went outside to work.
I had been working for half the day when I heard the old, worn down gates of Edoras open. I turned round to see who would want to come here at such times. Ah, of course Gandalf with his beautiful horse Shadowfax. He always showed up out of nowhere in the deadliest times with counsel and news. Know one knew where he came from and how old he was.
I stopped my musing, what was this, a man dwarf, and what an elf! Well that was odd you hardly ever saw an elf and never an elf with a dwarf. Gandalf rarely came with visitors. I was curios as to what Gandalf had to say although I know what the topic would be. I followed them to the great hall where Gandalf and his companions were stopped by the Royal Guard. It seems there was a short conversation and then Gandalf with a slight nod to his companions withdrew their weapons and handed them over with some reluctance. Ah that would be Wormtonge’s doing. They said he worked dark magic on the King but no one dared to do anything except the King’s nephew. He was banished a few days earlier and had left with a great host of men.
I noticed that Gandalf still had his staff. Some said it worked magic and some said it was just a walking stick. They seemed to have some disagreement but stopped and then they advanced inside. I needed a way to get in the Great Hall. The guards were going inside. They were just as curios as I was. I slipped in between the guards and went into the right hand side of the Hall. I saw Gandalf’s companions holding off the guard while Gandalf slowly advanced towards Théoden. Gandalf had had cast his grey cloak aside and had on white. The cloak seemed to shine with a brightness of its own. Gandalf stopped three paces from Théoden. Théoden seemed to talk not with his own voice but be projecting another’s. It seemed to say that he owned Rohan and that he could not kill him without killing Théoden. Gandalf replied that if it could not kill him than it could not kill Théoden. Gandalf raised his staff and seemed to cast something on Théoden. There seemed to be some kind of struggle going on between them. Their faces where terrible to behold, twisted with some deep struggle unseen. Meanwhile Gandalf’s companions where keeping the guards from getting near the throne. Ewain the Kings niece rushed up and would have gone to Théoden but the man who looked like he was a ranger held her back. Even after that she looked on the proceedings with a fearful gaze. After a time it seemed that Théoden snapped and would have fallen over but at that moment the Ranger (as I have dubbed him) released Ewain and she rushed to the King to support him. A rapid change occurred over Théoden’s face. In the last few years his beard had grown longer and grayer. Much more lines appeared on his face and his attitude seemed more aged. His face seemed to revert back the way it was the previous years. He looked into Ewain’s face as one trying to recall something pushed back into the back of ones memory waiting to come back some day and reveal itself. He said Ewain’s name and she smiled. They were lost for a moment until Théoden realized Gandalf standing nearby smiling.
He said a questioning voice “Gandalf?”
Chapter II
I slipped out of the Golden Hall quietly. Know doubt that everything would be all right. Gandalf would explain everything to Théoden. I had to get back to my work before Mother caught me and scolded me. I went back to work hoping Mother wouldn’t notice my absence. It would be best not to tell her anything because she would scold me for “poking your nose into the Kings business.”
About an hour later I was working outside the doors to the Golden Hall burst open. Théoden came striding out holding Wormtonge like a rag doll (Finally some justice). People going around doing their work stopped in wonderment and watched what would happen. I would be afraid for anybody that got in his way he looked like he could kill one hundred Uruks and not be rid of his rage. He threw Wormtonge down the stairs leading up to the Golden Hall. He rushed upon Wormtonge while drawing his sword, he would have slain Wormtonge but for the Ranger who stopped Théoden from Killing Wormtonge. He whispered something to Théoden of which no one including me could hear.
