He was a Farmer. In 1860 Census, Illinois, Mercer, Preemption #13, age 16, laborer, post office: Richland Grove, census taken 19 Jul 1860. In 1870 Census, Illinois, Mercer, Preemption Twp, age 26, living with brother John (age 24, Farmer) and mother Bridgett (age 60, Keeping House), census taken 13 Aug 1870.
