3. James F. Whelan was born on 22 October 1850 in New York City, Manhattan, NY.4 He died on 11 July 1929. He was buried at Hemingford Cemetery in Hemingford, Box Butte County, NE. James came to Waukegan, Illinois, with his family where they lived a few years, then moved to western Illinois. He and his brother John walked most of the way across Illinois. James went to college at Burlington, Iowa, and studied telegraphy, but his health failed and he had to give up that work. In 1887, James, wife Martha, and son Clyde homesteaded near Hemingford, Nebraska. The first year they lived in a cave, then they built a sod house.

James F. Whelan and Martha E. Roberts were married on 3 November 1879 in Henderson County, IL.5 Martha E. Roberts was born on 3 November 1859 at the Sunbeam neighborhood in Mercer County, IL. She died on 30 January 1943. She was buried at Hemingford Cemetery in Hemingford, Box Butte County, NE.
