Margaret Moore and James Whelan were married about 1848. James Whelan was born about 1820 in County Waterford, Ireland. He died about 1861 in Illinois.

James was one of the people who came to the United States because of the potato famine. As a young man he came to the United States at the New York Port of Entry. There he met Margaret, also known as Marguerite O'Moore. Three children were born to them while they lived in New York; then the family moved west to Waukegan, Illinois. While living there, three more children were born. James decided to come to western Illinois, and loading their effects on a wagon drawn by an ox team started the long trip across the state. John and his older brother James walked almost the entire way. Arriving in Warren County the family settled on a farm north of Little York, Illinois, where Thomas was born. After James Whelan's death, Margaret married James Hollinrake. They were the parents of Joseph A., who died in infancy and George Hollinrake.

Starting with James and Margaret as the first generation, we number Margaret as No. 1 which makes it easier to include her second family in all the lists. James is treated as the spouse and then their first child is No. 2 and so on through all their direct descendants.
