4. John Sylvester Whelan was born on 23 October 1852 in Brooklyn, NY. He died on 12 August 1921. He was buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Monmouth, Warren County, IL. John moved with his family to Waukegan, Illinois, when a lad. After a short residence there the family decided to move to western Illinois, settling on a farm north of Little York, Illinois. During this last move John and his brother James walked nearly the entire distance. After marrying Catherine Mason, he and his wife resided in Henderson County for four years then bought a farm of 160 acres in Hale Township, Warren County, known as the Old Junkin farm.

John Sylvester Whelan and Catherine Mason were married on 1 February 1877 in Henderson County, IL. Catherine Mason was born on 16 January 1855 in Ohio. She died on 24 March 1905. She was buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Monmouth, Warren County, IL.

Edgar J. Whelan was born on 15 March 1885 in Illinois. He died in a farm accident - kicked by a horse (age 6) on 21 August 1891 in Warren County, IL. He was buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Monmouth, Warren County, IL.

Bertha Irene Whelan was born on 27 December 1889 in Illinois. She died on 6 April 1907. Bertha died while attending school at Sisters of Charity, Davenport, Iowa. During her junior year she contracted scarlet fever causing acute nephritis and finally spinal meningitis. She was buried at St. Mary Cemetery in Monmouth, Warren County, IL.
