William Sloan was born on 24 January 1818 in County Antrim, Ireland. He died on 14 October 1879 in Illinois. William was a farmer and a boot maker in Ireland. Soon after his wife's death about November 1864, he came to the U.S. with three sons and five daughters and settled in Knox County, Illinois, and was a farmer there as stated in the 1870 census. After about ten years in Knox County, William moved to Biggsville, where he continued farming until his death. At the time of his death, he owned land in Henderson County and eighty acres in Union Country, Iowa. He died at the home of his daughter Agnes (Sloan) Hutchinson, north of Biggsville and is buried in the South Henderson Cemetery located near Biggsville.
