Lord Sherlock
Von Humboldt

In l976 my friend
had to go away for a job and asked us to take care of his bloodhound
Spike. I'd had Bassets before but Spike was the first bloodhound
I'd ever spent time with. Spike was so friendly and wonderful,
I fell in love. Then he grew ill and could never beat the
anaerobic bacteria that had invaded his body cavity. He had several
surgeries over the months and many different antibiotics were
tried but Spike died on a Thanksgiving morning. I had had
him for 8 months and my friend was due home the next week.
Here I had been trying to deal with having to give Spike back
and suddenly he was dead. I was heartbroken.
My friend was determined to find another bloodhound. A year later
he finally found a litter in Santa Rosa and brought his pup home,
the next day we went to meet his puppy. Well it was more
than we could stand! The next week-end I was in Santa Rosa
surrounded by a litter of 12 week old bloodhounds. I knew
I wanted a red one but what to do -- there were 5 red ones
and they were all adorable. So I sat down to watch them
and lo and behold one of them kept coming up to me.
So my first bloodhound picked me! I named him Lord Sherlock
Von Humboldt and called him Sherlock.

This was l977
and Sherlock graced my life for almost 13 years. His last
two years his rear legs became paralyzed due to an inoperable
condition in his spinal cord. With the aid of a K9 Cart we were
able to take walks everyday and we were even able to go to the
beach -- his favorite place. The picture of Sherlock in
his cart at the beach was taken on his 12th birthday.
