Some More Guitars

[ Hondo LP ] [ $65 Guitar ] [ Silent Classical Guitar ]

I found this Hondo at a pawn shop in Midland. It's kind of like a cross between a Les Paul Jr. and a Tele Custom. I was going to sell it on eBay, but I like the way it plays. I may swap out the pickups for some better ones.

I think the guitar with the red knobs is a Holiday, but I'm not sure. I bought it on eBay for $65 and it's the best $65 guitar I've ever played. The neck had a significant bow in it when I got it and it didn't have a truss rod. I took the fretboard off and found an aluminum T-shaped reinforcing rod. I removed that, installed a "truss rod" (actually a threaded 3/16" rod from the local hardware store) in the existing channel, capped the channel with a short length of pine trim and glued the fretboard back on. The job was very amateurish but the results were great. The neck is straight and the action is low. The single coil pickups have a sound very much like a Telecaster.

The "silent classical" guitar was made in China. It has an annoying echo "feature" that I guess is supposed to make it sound like you're playing in an auditorium.
