Nana's Story

My name is Ann, also known as Nana to my seven wonderful grandchildren and customers.
My husband is a minister, and in 1990, our small congregation was raising money for a down-payment on new property for the church. I had a desire to give a personal offering toward the purchase, but was not employed outside our home.
At the time, my mother was baking pies for a small restaurant on Lake Livingston in Livingston, Texas. This was something Mom was really good at, but I really could not remember if I had ever made a pie myself! But I believe God woke me one morning with the thought, “pies!”
I had some lady friends who worked at one of the local banks and the local telephone company, so I thought those would be good starting places —businesses where there were lots of ladies! So, I made a phone call to my friends, telling them of my idea and asking them to inquire around to see if anyone would like a homemade pie.
The very next day, these ladies called back and asked me, “Are you ready for this?! Get your pen and pad!” That first weekend I made $100. The ladies asked me if I was going to continue doing this, and I said if there was a need, yes!
This continued for several months. I would bake the pies and deliver them, not only to the bank and the telephone company, but soon other business places began to hear of my pies, and I had several places I delivered pies to each Friday.
One day one of my customers asked me if I would make a wedding cake! Right away, I thought of some dear friends who were in the business who did beautiful work. They agreed to help me with my first wedding cake! It seemed that a door was opening for me, so I began to step through that door. I took two courses at our local community college, and Nana’s Wedding Cakes was born!
Through word of mouth, I have become known as “the cake lady!” From those early days of homemade pies to pound cakes shipped all over the country (and even internationally!) to weddings large and small, my business continues to grow. It has been a blessing of the Lord that He dropped in my lap, far beyond my wildest dreams! I am amazed at the wonderful people I’ve met and at the blessing it has been to have a part in their celebrations, whether it be a wedding, an anniversary, shower, an everyday dinner cake or client gifts for companies during the holidays.
    To God be the glory!
