Pacific Seafarer's
Network is a network
of radio operators and hf radio to computer to internet networking
systems
that handles radio and internet email communication traffic between
sailing
and motoring vessels operating on all oceans and land based parties
across
the planet. The land station Net Control Amateur Stations and hf
radio to internet gateway stations are located in various locations
throughout
the Continental United States, Hawaii, and New Zealand. Duties consist
of administering voice and digital communications traffic including
daily
position reporting and automatic posting of positions on several web
sites,
message handling via email relays, Health and Welfare traffic, phone
patch
services, search and rescue coordination, and vessel equipment
inventories
for search and rescue operations. Life threatening emergencies are
taken
from any vessel whether or not they have amateur radio licenses. Net
control
stations keep computer databases on participating vessels and their
movements
throughout the oceans. A master database of vessels over the past
5 years is kept on a web server in New Zealand and is being updated
many
times daily by hf email, internet email, and manual input.
This is an ongoing effort requiring 5 hours per day to "team
administer"
with about 10 other members.
This
image diagrams our
worldwide
communications network that ties together families, vessel crews at
sea,
weather forecasters and the various databases and servers that keep the
information flowing. The system is automatic with exception of manual
input
by Pacific Seafarer's Net controllers, QTH Reporter land stations, and
the boat crews. Satellite communications is cost prohibitive for most
of
these vessel owners which drives the ongoing use of HF shortwave
communications
systems. The system has documented voyages by more than 1500
sailing
vessels worldwide.
