Robert married Elizabeth Gooden CROOK-[126] [MRIN:51], daughter of David COOK-[129] and Rebecca ATKINS-[130], on 12 Feb 1849 in Smith County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was born on 28 Jan 1829 in Tennessee.



Their children were:


   11 M    i. James Levander SIKES-[128] was born on 11 Nov 1854 in Smith County, Tennessee and died on 13 Dec 1929 in Boothe, Arkansas.

James married Barbara Allen LIPE-[139] [MRIN:52]. Barbara was born on 28 Jan 1872 and died on 29 Jan 1956 in Logan County, Arkansas.



10. Levander SYKES-[1] was born in Oct 1824 in Smith County, Tennessee and died on 13 Mar 1912 in Johnson County, Clarksville, Arkansas.


Lavander join the 4th Arkansas Calvary Company B. as a Pvt. on December 18, 1863 at Dardanelle, Arkansas at the age of 40.

The 1860 Census of DeKalb County, Tennessee listed Levander Sykes 34, his wife Frances 36; dau's Amand E.11, Catharine 7 & Frances 11/12; son's Robert 9 & Levander R. (Initial looks like a B, but looking at the (R) in Robert we believe it to be an ( R) .

The 1870 Census of Johnson County, Clarksville, Arkansas listed Levander Sykes 45, his wife Nancy 38, Robert 18, Levander 11 (it looks like a 4) still living at home & the son of Levander & Nancy Oscar 1. Also living with them was Sarah J. Kelly & Martha A. Kelly, (we assume that these were Nancy's daughters by her previous marriage.); Nathan Howard & Sarah Howard. (Nancy's parents)


Johnson County, Arkansas Marriages 1808---1924 shows Levander Sykes marries Mrs. Nancy Kelly on October 24, 1865. Ref: Book N, Page 108. Note: Nancy maiden name was "Howard".


1900 Census of Grant Township, Town of Coal Hill, Arkansas showed Levander living with his daughter and son-in-law ( Dero Duty & Thresa D. "Sykes" Duty)


Levander volunteered for the Union US Cavalry at Dardanelle, Ark. on 12-18-1863 and was assigned to Co. F, Fourth Regiment. According to the Declaration of Recruit record, Pvt. Levander Sykes had dark eyes, dark hair, dark complexion and was 5 ft. 7 inches high. Later was assign to Capt. Laffery's Co. B. One of the Company Muster Roll's show Levander received "Pay Due for Use & Risk of Horse & Horse Equipment from Jan. 1, to Jun. 30, 1864". Levander was released from the service at the Cavalry Depot, Devall's Bluff, Ark. on Nov. 27, 1864


Levander is buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Johnson County, Clarksville, Arkansas and Nancy "Howard" Kelly, his wife, is buried next to him. There is no marker at either grave site but the Oakland Cemetery attendant/supervisor took us (Paul & Blanche Qualls) to the location of their grave site by using his map of the cemetery.

Levander married Frances DRIVER-[96] [MRIN:1] about 1848. Frances was born about 1824 in Tennessee.



Their children were:


   12 F    i. Amanda E. SYKES-[97] was born about 1849 in Tennessee.

+ 13 M    ii. Robert SYKES-[98] was born on 14 Nov 1850 in Tennessee and died on 5 Sep 1935 in Morrilton , Arkansas.

   14 F    iii. Catharine SYKES-[99] was born about 1853 in Tennessee.

+ 15 M    iv. Levander SYKES Jr.-[4] was born about 1858 in Dekalb County, Tempreance Hall, Tennessee and died on 28 Mar 1961 in Crawford County, Mulberry, Arkansas.

   16 F    v. Francis SYKES-[101] was born about 1860 in Tennessee.


Levander next married Mrs. Nancy A . HOWARD-[2] [MRIN:2], daughter of Nathan HOWARD-[164] and Sarah (Sally) STANDIFER-[165], on 24 Oct 1865 in Johnson County, Clarksville, Arkansas. Mrs. was born on 27 Apr 1830 in Bledsoe, Tennessee and died on 7 Jul 1897 in Johnson County, Clarksville, Arkansas.

+ 18 F    ii. Thresa D. SYKES-[3] was born on 10 May 1877 in Arkansas.
