Incense And Potpourri
Incense and potpourri has been used for thousands of years, and not just as a mask for people smoking pot...lmao. Most of the reasons were very mundane. In places where bathes were not daily occurances, deoderants were not in existence, and your toilet was a bedpan type thing that stayed in the house and got emptied occasionally; odors were a major consideration. So, in comes the incense and (what we call today in our oh-so-correct language) potpourri. I have a major hang-up about the word "potpourri". I have been corrected on the proper pronunciation of it a hundred times. Welllll, the word was not around when I was a kid...and we got along just fine. We called the pot of herbs on the stove simmering in the pot of water, (the pot of herbs). The flowers and herbs that were in the basket in the living room were: "the basket of flowers". And they smelled just as wonderful as the potpourri kind do. lol. Now, off my soapbox. lol.
When you are talking about incense, you are talking about herbs, resins, and flowers that will be burned in one of several ways to release their energies and scents. With potpourri, you either simmer the herbs in water, or place them in a container with a lid and occasionally lift the lid to release the scents. All of the recipes for potpourri on this page are for decoration. The simmering kinds of potpourri, I have included in Teas and Brews.
The first section on this page will be recipes for the potpourri, the second section will be the incense. If you would like to skip to the incense now, CLICK here.
