The Value of Native Plants

Native plants have much to offer. They can be beautiful in the garden, and in addition they:

  • are adapted to the climate and soil

  • require less water in most cases

  • use no fertilizer

  • encourage beneficial insects that help control undesirable insects

  • encourage pollinators that need specific plants for their larvae to eat

  • provide shelter for wildlife

  • can be selected to grow in shade or sun, wet or dry areas

  • can be combined with other carefully selected plants, particularly those from other Mediterranean climates

  • can convey a sense of heritage and belonging

  • can stimulate an interest in learning about plant adaptations and our environment
