South Yuba River and wildflowers

Many people share the tradition of walking the Buttermilk Bend Trail of the South Yuba River State Park to enjoy spring wildflowers and views of the South Yuba River.

Englebright Reservoir

Point Defiance is a good place to think about reservoirs and the flow of rivers or to simply enjoy the warm sunshine on the shore of Englebright Lake.

A native plant garden

This home garden of California native plants mixed with selected other plants was bare ground two years before the picture was taken. The decomposed gravel pathway invites visitors to explore the wide variety of plants that can be grown in the local area.

Welcome

Welcome to Gardening with Native Plants in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. The purpose of this website is to provide a resource for gardeners new to the area or for anyone wishing to make changes to an existing property.

The charm of living in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada is that we may choose to live in a conifer forest, in oak woodlands, in chaparral or on grasslands.  We are here to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us. Planting natives in our gardens can help replace some of the native plants that are gradually disappearing as aggressive imported plants take their place and as more homes are built on previously wild land. Whether you have acreage or a small lot, the information on this site will facilitate landscaping with native plants, which will enhance your property in both appearance and usefulness while contributing to the preservation of our countryside.
