Gibbous Moon – more than first quarter and less than full
Harvest Moon - Not so long ago, before electric lights, farmers
relied on moonlight to harvest autumn crops. With everything ripening at once,
there was too much work to to do to stop at sundown. A bright full moon—a
"Harvest Moon"—allowed work to continue into the night. Harvest
Moon
Blue Moon – There are three explanations: 1) The second full
Moon in a calendar month is called a "Blue Moon, 2) The very earliest uses
of the term were remarkably like saying the Moon is made of green cheese. Both
were obvious absurdities, about which there could be no doubt, and 3) The Moon
actually appears blue in the sky. When the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded
in 1883, its dust turned sunsets green and the Moon blue all around the world
for the best part of two years. Blue

“Soft Addictions” Judith
Miller: “The average person she's met on her speaking and research travels
spends $15,000 a year on his or her soft addictions”
Soft additions are, for example: :shopping, coffee,
daydreaming, constantly checking your finances, biting your nails, television,
etc
Five most-chronicled "hard" addictions:
alcohol, drugs, tobacco, gambling and eating disorders
An executive cannot gradually
dismiss details. Business is made up of
details and I notice that the chief executive who dismisses them is quite
likely to dismiss his business. Success
is the sum of detail. It might perhaps
be pleasing to imagine oneself beyond detail and engaged only in great things,
but as I have often observed, if one tends only to great things and lets the
little things pass the great things become little; that is, the business
shrinks. It is not possible for an
executive to hold himself aloof from anything.
No business, no matter what its size, can be called safe until it has
been forced to learn economy and rigidly to measure values of men and
materials. Harvey S. Firestone
If you want to fail, follow
these rules: Worry, hurry, eat too much, let your emotions run wild, and spend
your days in idleness.
Everything you see or work
with can be improved. You have
opportunities. If you want to get ahead
in this life, nobody can stop you except yourself.
Money vs Success - “After you
reach a certain point, money becomes unimportant. What matters is success.” Aristotle Onassis
The importance of a dollar -
“I have money to last me the rest of my life . . . unless I buy something.”
Jackie Mason
Why employees don’t work to
full capacity. 25% of workers say they could be 50% more work. Why don’t they:
1) Not being involved in decision making, 2) The lack of a reward for good
performance, 3) No opportunity for advancement, 4) Lack of supervision, and 5)
Inadequate training. From Compensation & Benefits Review, American
Management Association
Some people think B-school is
mostly about networking and playing golf. – That’s just a lot of bunk. I’m convinced there is such an important body
of knowledge that we call management.
It’s founded in the social sciences, economics – how markets function,
how firms behave, how you make money or lose money, how people Function both
individually and in groups and teams. An

If you have something to add or pictures to post, email them to me: d rinkard

Day 1 Saturday – The Drinkard’s and Paw Paw and Maw Maw spent the night in Charlotte Friday. Arrived at Cherry Grove at 2:00 pm Saturday, we chanced to get behind the Gores at ? and followed them in. Staying at the same house as last year, the Cassie at 4010 Ocean Blvd N. 3:00 pm, lunch/dinner at the Duffy Street Seafood Shack. Evening activities: walks on the beach, evening TV (bull riding). Weather windy and hazy, ocean was rough.
Day 2 Sunday – Up at 5:30 am for morning run and pick up a paper, overcast all day, light rain started around 11:00, continued until 2:00, David and I went to the Flea Market, “Steel Bass” was the catch of the day and Joe Namath paperback, the “Market” isn’t what it used to be, three buildings burned down (struck by lighting) and they are being rebuilt. The Lost Diamond Incident - When the girls where at the Flea Market earlier today, Nancy lost the diamond from her ring, Maw Maw’s sharp eye found it in the gravel, pine needles, garbage, cigarette butts, etc as well as under the edge of the mat at the entrance to the Dog Tag, Maw Maw Saved the Day - It’s a Miracle. Beach activities: reading, Frisbee, and horseshoes. Umbrella Incident - David’s beach umbrella disappeared from the beach. Ryan, Mandy, and Taylor arrived around 8:00. The Gores, Drinkards and Maw Maw - diner at the Sea Merchant was excellent, great steaks and kiev chicken, the leftovers were brought home to Paw Paw. 9:00 pm spending the evening peeling apples getting ready for Maw Maw’s breakfast and watching the first pre-season pro football game of the season Oakland and Philadelphia.
Day 3 Monday – Up late 7:00 am, no run, Maw Maw’s breakfast of biscuits, gravy, and fried apples. The Cinnamon Incident - don’t suggest that cinnamon would have made the apples better. A full day at the beach for everyone, no one sunburned yet, beach activities - Frisbee, horseshoes, rafts, water aerobics: Margie, Nancy, (and I hate to say it) Martha (“Churn that water”, “Make it churn”). The Gores, Drinkards, Ryan and Mandy dinner at Nakato Japaneses Steakhouse (It’s all about the salad dressing). “I like your new face cream Nancy! “It went on soooo smooth.” Did you find that at the Flea Market?
Day 4 Tuesday – Up at 5:45 am, run to the pier medium tempo, back, fast tempo. Cheryl’s monkey bread, fruit, grits, canned biscuits for brunch. Great breakfast! Picture Link.
Jiggled Door Knob Incident – David: I did not do it. Ryan: no smoking gun. Jim: don’t need a preponderance of evidence, do you have an alibi. Ryan: Dad’s full of it. Jim: let’s recreate the scene. David: it was a weird coincidence; Would I rattle the door just to make the dog bark? Ryan: (payback) I will turn the dog loose on you (Writers comment: the dog is 8” high – a real Killer!). Ryan: I can’t say Dad did it for sure. Bill: We need to bring Wanda to the stand to testify. Comment: potential mistrial - we suspect Ryan of coaching a witness (Mandy). David: Lyndsay it was maybe you. Lyndsay: I did take a shit at two o’clock. Jim: But the evidence is gone now. David: I may have been drying my butt (here is the visual-he stands and demonstrates the butt wiggle with an imaginary towel) and bumped the door handle. You decide.
Despite the Jiggled Door Knob Incident, the days highlight is David getting Wanda in the ocean up to her head, beyond the breakers. This is big – Wanda has never been in the ocean above her angles! Her next move – water aerobics with the Girls!
Nancy Quote: “I will not be putting on makeup tonight.”
Dinner Plans: 5:30 pm White Point, Lyndsay is off to the Pelican's baseball game with J.C., the Whites (Jr. and David clan) and Maw Maw are headed to the K & W Cafeteria, and the Whites (Ryan clan) are off to the Australian Grill. 7:15 pm White Point is gone, ate at Bennett’s, all you can eat, Dylan and Jim ate 6 clusters of snow crabs each (1½ clusters per pound).

Nancy panics, she gets very excited, she thanks someone has jumped in front of her, who was it that snuck in front of her -- Nancy: when you read this - it was your very own son who turned the water on and locked a door– Jarron!
Ryan, Mandy, and Taylor left at 4:00 pm, Ryan had to go to work tonight at 11:00 pm.
Dinner at Tony’s at Calabash, NC for the Gore’s and Drinkard’s, Nancy wants to be reminded not to get the lasagna. Dinner at Hodgeskins for the White Jr’s and Maw Maw, dinner brought home for Paw Paw.
Evening activities: we fixed 14 clusters, 10.55 lbs @ $6.95 per lb, of Alaskan snow crabs from Eugene Platts, they were tenderer and tastier than what we have had in restaurants. Bowl of Crab Parts

Lyndsay: “Every bite I say is gonna be my last bite is the best bite ever!”
Martha: “These are the best crabs I’ve ever had?”
Grandpa: (on the phone with Margie, Grandpa is babysitting “Little Houdini” a.k.a. Georgie) “She’s peed twice and shit once.”
The setup - after the crabs have been eaten: Uncle Bill: “Tums!, Tums!, Tums!, anyone.”
Nancy: “Jim will want one” (Jim doesn’t want a tum) Nancy: “Well you always get on at home.” Jim: “Well I always eat your cooking!”
Day 6 Thursday – Up at 5:25 am, light drizzle again this morning, dawn light shows up around 6:00am, off to Boulineau’s for a newspaper.
Breakfast: Oats, bacon, and buttered toast. Lyndsay: “The toast is burnt (Lyndsay eats her oats by putting a spoonful on her toast).” Maw Maw: “This toast is ok.” Lyndsay: “It’s the oats.” . . . . Martha goes out to Boulineau’s for more oats - try again – the oats on the bottom of the pan were burnt.
Boulineau's (Located in the corner of North Ocean Blvd. and 23rd Avenue N., 2310 N Ocean Blvd, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582)

Biscuits: mix oil/fat/butter
into flour with fork
2 ¼ cups flour
1/3 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
5 tablespoons lard
1 cup buttermilk
Sift and mix dry ingredients, then blend with lard. Add
buttermilk. For each biscuit, pinch off a portion of
dough about the shape of a large egg and pat out with
your hands. Bake in a 350-degree oven in wood stove
about 10 minutes. In a modern electric or gas stove, bake
at 475-500 degrees. Makes about 8 large biscuits.

Choked Biscuits Ronni
Lundy, her cookbook: Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes and Honest Fried Chicken
2 and 1/2 cups soft-wheat flour
1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 slightly softened butter (Crisco is fine)
1 cup buttermilk
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix or sift together flour, baking powder and soda, and salt. Cut butter into
the flour mixture and use fingers or a spoon to lightly blend. Dump buttermilk
into the flour all at once and mix quickly and lightly just until dough holds
together. Turn out on a well-floured board, pat out and fold it over a couple
of times, lightly. Roll out to 3/4 inch thickness and cut with a straight-sided
biscuit cutter. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for
15-20 minutes until tops are golden brown.
To choke your biscuits, grab
a big handful of dough in your left hand (if you're right handed, or vice versa
if you're not) and pat it smooth lightly. Then squeeze a biscuit-sized lump of
the dough through the circle made with your thumb and forefinger, pushing
gently from the back with your right hand. Put on an ungreased baking sheet
with the rough, broken surface down.

According to Mister Rogers
I like to swim, but there are
some days I just don’t feel much like doing it – but I do it anyway! I know
it’s good for me and I promised myself I’d do it every day, and I like to keep
my promises. That’s one of my
disciplines. And it’s a good feeling
after you’ve tried and done something well.
Inside you think, “I’ve kept at this and I’ve really learned it – not by
magic, but by my own work.”

I might add, replace the word swim with: run,
workout, teach, go to work,

is generally confused with dependence.
Those of us who have grown in true love know that we can love only in
proportion to our capacity for independence.

It’s just that in this age of almost instantaneous communication, we

Civilized people cannot fully

And, it is not strange that desire should so many years outlive

Ericsson's research suggests a
third cliché as well: when it comes to choosing a life path, you should do what
you love — because if you don't love it, you are unlikely to work hard enough
to get very good. Most people naturally don't like to do things they aren't
"good" at. So they often give up, telling themselves they simply
don't possess the talent for math or skiing or the violin. But what they really
lack is the desire to be good and to undertake the deliberate practice that
would make them better. From New York

It is a rare and a high
privilege to be in a position to help people understand the difference that
they can make not only in their own lives but in the lives of others by simply
giving of themselves.
Knowledge is happiness,
because to have knowledge -- broad, deep knowledge -- is to know true ends from
false, and lofty things from low.
There is nothing like a dream
to create the future.
And it's a good feeling after
you've tried and done something well.
Inside you think. "I've kept at this and I've really learned it --
not by magic, but by my own work."
I wish you well in your
endeavors and continued well being.

It's not about getting a scholarship, being drafted or making Sports Center. It's a deep need that comes from the heart. We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat, to compete. We don't practice with a future Twins first baseman, we don't lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift weights with a future doctor or nurse or engineer or businessperson. We do sign graduate applications, MCAT exams and student petitions. If we miss a kick or strike out, we don't let down the entire state. But the hurt is still the same. And when it's all over, we will walk off the track, court, or ice for the last time and our hearts will crumble. But deep down, we are proud of ourselves. We will forever be college athletes. They were shouting vulgarities and scaring away the fish, she complained. She said she wanted to talk to the Park Superintendent.
