Weekday October 2 - 6, 2006

Gibbous Moon – more than first quarter and less than full

Harvest Moon - Not so long ago, before electric lights, farmers relied on moonlight to harvest autumn crops. With everything ripening at once, there was too much work to to do to stop at sundown. A bright full moon—a "Harvest Moon"—allowed work to continue into the night.  Harvest Moon

Blue Moon – There are three explanations: 1) The second full Moon in a calendar month is called a "Blue Moon, 2) The very earliest uses of the term were remarkably like saying the Moon is made of green cheese. Both were obvious absurdities, about which there could be no doubt, and 3) The Moon actually appears blue in the sky. When the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded in 1883, its dust turned sunsets green and the Moon blue all around the world for the best part of two years. Blue Moon

Business Books To Read

An executive cannot gradually dismiss details.  Business is made up of details and I notice that the chief executive who dismisses them is quite likely to dismiss his business.  Success is the sum of detail.  It might perhaps be pleasing to imagine oneself beyond detail and engaged only in great things, but as I have often observed, if one tends only to great things and lets the little things pass the great things become little; that is, the business shrinks.  It is not possible for an executive to hold himself aloof from anything.  No business, no matter what its size, can be called safe until it has been forced to learn economy and rigidly to measure values of men and materials. Harvey S. Firestone

If you want to fail, follow these rules: Worry, hurry, eat too much, let your emotions run wild, and spend your days in idleness.

Everything you see or work with can be improved.  You have opportunities.  If you want to get ahead in this life, nobody can stop you except yourself.

Money vs Success - “After you reach a certain point, money becomes unimportant.  What matters is success.” Aristotle Onassis

The importance of a dollar - “I have money to last me the rest of my life . . . unless I buy something.” Jackie Mason

Why employees don’t work to full capacity. 25% of workers say they could be 50% more work. Why don’t they: 1) Not being involved in decision making, 2) The lack of a reward for good performance, 3) No opportunity for advancement, 4) Lack of supervision, and 5) Inadequate training. From Compensation & Benefits Review, American Management Association

Some people think B-school is mostly about networking and playing golf. – That’s just a lot of bunk.  I’m convinced there is such an important body of knowledge that we call management.  It’s founded in the social sciences, economics – how markets function, how firms behave, how you make money or lose money, how people Function both individually and in groups and teams.  An M.B.A. gives you a way of thinking.

It’s a sad, sad, dawn

Willie died last night

And it breaks my heart

Drinkin’ hard liquor and beer

Knowin’ that he’s gone

“At Pandora.com visitors are invited to enter the name of their favorite artist or song and to get in return a stream of music with similar “DNA,” in effect a private Internet radio station microtailored to each user’s tastes.  Pandora’s innovation is to focus on the formal elements of songs, rather than their popular appeal.” (and I will add – the promotional, self interest of the record companies)

Other customizable Internet radio services: Last.fm, Yahoo’s Launchcast and RealNetworks’ Rhapsody are pointing users to music far beyond the playlists that confine most FM radio broadcasts.

That’s a watershed moment.” (I can’t wait!)

Tarzan only laughed, and in another moment, the jungle had swallowed him.  The men stood silent for some moments, and then slowly turned and walked back to the hotel veranda.  Tarzan had no sooner entered the jungle then he took to the trees.  And it was with a feeling of exultant freedom that he swung once more through the forest branches.  This was life. If you have something to add or pictures to post, email them to me: d rinkard @ charter .net (leave the spaces out)

Day 1 Saturday – The Drinkard’s and Paw Paw and Maw Maw spent the night in Charlotte Friday.  Arrived at Cherry Grove at 2:00 pm Saturday, we chanced to get behind the Gores at ? and followed them in.  Staying at the same house as last year, the Cassie at 4010 Ocean Blvd N.  3:00 pm, lunch/dinner at the Duffy Street Seafood Shack.  Evening activities: walks on the beach, evening TV (bull riding). Weather windy and hazy, ocean was rough.

Jiggled Door Knob Incident – David: I did not do it.  Ryan: no smoking gun.  Jim: don’t need a preponderance of evidence, do you have an alibi.  Ryan: Dad’s full of it.  Jim: let’s recreate the scene.  David: it was a weird coincidence; Would I rattle the door just to make the dog bark?  Ryan: (payback) I will turn the dog loose on you (Writers comment: the dog is 8” high – a real Killer!).  Ryan: I can’t say Dad did it for sure.  Bill: We need to bring Wanda to the stand to testify.  Comment: potential mistrial - we suspect Ryan of coaching a witness (Mandy).  David: Lyndsay it was maybe you.  Lyndsay: I did take a shit at two o’clock.  Jim: But the evidence is gone now.  David: I may have been drying my butt (here is the visual-he stands and demonstrates the butt wiggle with an imaginary towel) and bumped the door handle.  You decide.

Despite the Jiggled Door Knob Incident, the days highlight is David getting Wanda in the ocean up to her head, beyond the breakers.  This is big – Wanda has never been in the ocean above her angles!  Her next move – water aerobics with the Girls!

The fountain of content must spring up in the mind; and he who has so little knowledge of human nature as to see happiness by changing anything but his own disposition, will waste his life in fruitless efforts, and multiply the grief’s which he proposes to remove.

Learn to be pleased with everything; with Wealth, so far as it makes us beneficial to others; with Poverty, for not having much to care for; and with Obscurity, for being unenvied.

Everyone is Enthusiastic at times.  One man has enthusiasm for 30 minutes – another has it for 30 days, but it is the man who has it for 30 years who makes a success in life.

·        1 tablespoon capers

·        2-3 teaspoons fresh basil

Biscuits: mix oil/fat/butter into flour with fork

Bryson City Cathead Biscuits           http://www.press-enterprise.com/newsarchive/1999/09/29/938570505.html

            2 ¼ cups flour

            1/3 teaspoon baking soda

            1 teaspoon salt

            2 teaspoons baking powder

            5 tablespoons lard

            1 cup buttermilk

Sift and mix dry ingredients, then blend with lard. Add buttermilk. For each biscuit, pinch off a portion of

dough about the shape of a large egg and pat out with your hands. Bake in a 350-degree oven in wood stove

about 10 minutes. In a modern electric or gas stove, bake at 475-500 degrees. Makes about 8 large biscuits.

Also try this link for Cathead biscuits:  http://www.deltablues.net/biscuit.html

Choked Biscuits     Ronni Lundy, her cookbook: Shuck Beans, Stack Cakes and Honest Fried Chicken

            2 and 1/2 cups soft-wheat flour

1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

            1/2 teaspoon baking soda

            1 teaspoon salt

1/2 slightly softened butter (Crisco is fine)

            1 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix or sift together flour, baking powder and soda, and salt. Cut butter into the flour mixture and use fingers or a spoon to lightly blend. Dump buttermilk into the flour all at once and mix quickly and lightly just until dough holds together. Turn out on a well-floured board, pat out and fold it over a couple of times, lightly. Roll out to 3/4 inch thickness and cut with a straight-sided biscuit cutter. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes until tops are golden brown.

To choke your biscuits, grab a big handful of dough in your left hand (if you're right handed, or vice versa if you're not) and pat it smooth lightly. Then squeeze a biscuit-sized lump of the dough through the circle made with your thumb and forefinger, pushing gently from the back with your right hand. Put on an ungreased baking sheet with the rough, broken surface down.

Tuesday June 6, 2006 (6/6/06)

There are times all during life when we need the inner resources to keep ourselves busy and productive all by ourselves.

Mr. Rogers, from The World According to Mister Rogers

I like to swim, but there are some days I just don’t feel much like doing it – but I do it anyway! I know it’s good for me and I promised myself I’d do it every day, and I like to keep my promises.  That’s one of my disciplines.  And it’s a good feeling after you’ve tried and done something well.  Inside you think, “I’ve kept at this and I’ve really learned it – not by magic, but by my own work.”

Mr. Rogers, from The World According to Mister Rogers

I might add, replace the word swim with:  run,  workout,  teach,  go to work,  clean up, etc.)

We need to help people to discover the true meaning of love.  Love is generally confused with dependence.  Those of us who have grown in true love know that we can love only in proportion to our capacity for independence.

Mr. Rogers, from The World According to Mister Rogers

I think I pursued life as a solitary, singular experience.  And so my values were inside, not outside.  I didn’t look to anybody else for compliments.  I went and did what I did the best I could do it.  I was always the ultimate judge of what I achieved.  George Sheehan

Heard the Good News?  Things are better than you think. Yes, I know, most Americans are in a sour mood these days, convinced that the struggle in Iraq is an endless cycle of bloodshed, certain that our economy is in dismal shape, lamenting that the nation and the world are off on the wrong track.  That’s what polls tell us. But if we look at some other numbers, we’ll find that we are living not in the worst of times but in something much closer to the best.

I’m not convinced that the world is in any worse shape than it ever was.  It’s just that in this age of almost instantaneous communication, we bear the weight of problems our forefathers only read about after they were solved.

Ericsson's research suggests a third cliché as well: when it comes to choosing a life path, you should do what you love — because if you don't love it, you are unlikely to work hard enough to get very good. Most people naturally don't like to do things they aren't "good" at. So they often give up, telling themselves they simply don't possess the talent for math or skiing or the violin. But what they really lack is the desire to be good and to undertake the deliberate practice that would make them better.  From New York Times article, Freakonomics-A Star Is Made, by STEPHEN J. It is a rare and a high privilege to be in a position to help people understand the difference that they can make not only in their own lives but in the lives of others by simply giving of themselves.

Knowledge is happiness, because to have knowledge -- broad, deep knowledge -- is to know true ends from false, and lofty things from low.

There is nothing like a dream to create the future.

And it's a good feeling after you've tried and done something well.  Inside you think. "I've kept at this and I've really learned it -- not by magic, but by my own work."

I wish you well in your endeavors and continued well being.  Sincerely,  Matt

It's not about getting a scholarship, being drafted or making Sports Center.  It's a deep need that comes from the heart.  We need to practice, to play, to lift, to hustle, to sweat, to compete.  We don't practice with a future Twins first baseman, we don't lift weights with a future Olympic wrestler; we lift weights with a future doctor or nurse or engineer or businessperson.  We do sign graduate applications, MCAT exams and student petitions.  If we miss a kick or strike out, we don't let down the entire state.  But the hurt is still the same. And when it's all over, we will walk off the track, court, or ice for the last time and our hearts will crumble.  But deep down, we are proud of ourselves.  We will forever be college athletes.  IM posted by: UC Volleyball #9 ~ taking a nap... ~ leave me one!  Amanda
