There is an IGI record which lists him as “John Adam” but there is no documentation to support that, and the Early German convention is that if he was John Adam he would have used Adam in civil records which he did not. All the following information is from Anita Schultz-Peters: He served 154 days in Lord Dunsmore's War (pre-Revolutionary War). He was on the Romney & Winchester Pay Rolls, (Roll 78) October 1775 Capt. James Parsons Roll, page 5. He was granted a pension as a Revolutionary soldier from the Virginia House of Delegates 4 December 1820. I have documented that John Stutler was born about 1757 where unknown and died about 1827 in Virginia. He married Sarah about 1784. Many family sources say John was the son of John Stutler and Mary Newberger, but I have found no documentation to support this. Oral family tradition also states that John's wife was Sarah Hughes. I have not yet found any documentation to support this and the DAR will only accept that her name was Sarah. No other researchers that have made the claims of his parentage or wife's maiden name has ever come forth with documentation so I have to assume there is none. I have documented the children of John and Sarah Stutler through an indenture in Harrison County, Virginia in 1829 of which I have a copy. Children as follows: 1) William Stutler (my direct line) born 22 January 1785 in Virginia and died 8 October 1830 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Martha (Patsy) Upton, daughter of Samuel Upton and Mary Ann Lanham 10 January 1811 in Monongalia County, Virginia. This is all documented through Bible, marriage, death, will, census and deed records and from William's headstone. 2) Martha Stutler was born 10 September 1875 and died in Harrison County, Virginia 22 October 1864. (I realize the births are only 9 months apart, unusual but not impossible and both births are documented through headstones and supported by census and other records.) Martha married William Carder, son of William Carder and Nancy Lowther, 26 October 1808 in Harrison County, Virginia. 3) John Stutler was born 13 July 1787 in Virginia and died in 1873 in Roane County, Virginia. He married Nancy Carder, daughter of William Carder and Nancy Lowther, 13 August 1816 in Harrison County, Virginia. 4) Elias Stutler born about 1794 in Virginia and died 17 October 1870 in Harrison County, Virginia. He married three times: a) Nancy Hughes, daughter of Jonathan Hughes and Sarah Jackson, 13 January 1816 in Harrison County, Virginia b) Hannah Howard - I have nothing to document this but supposedly they married about 1840 and she died about 1844 c) c)he married Rebecca Helm 5 September 1845, but again I have not documented this but census records support his wife's name as Rebecca. 5) Simon Stutler - the only mention of this child was in a book written by Glady Stutler Hoffman. He was supposedly born about 1796, but is not mentioned in the indenture for the sale of property by Sarah Stutler and John Stutler's heirs. 6) Robert Stutler was born 22 February 1799 in Virginia and died 23 September 1886 in Harrison County, West Virginia. He first married Leah Hughes, daughter of Jonathan Hughes and Sarah Jackson, 18 May 1820 in Harrison County, Virginia and second married Jemima Hoover 19 December 1865 in Harrison County and third married Sarah A. Smith 25 June 1868 in Harrison County. 7) Nancy Stutler born about 1802 in Virginia and died 11 August 1874 in Doddridge County, West Virginia. She married David W. Frasure (Frazier), son of Nimrod Frasure and Sudna Hughes, 18 June 1829 in Virginia. 8) Samuel Stutler was born about 1804 in Virginia and died after 1850. He first married Mary Ann Post, daughter of Martin and Sarah Post, 18 April 1823 in Harrison County. He second married Margaret Ann Lawrentz, 21 February 1840 in Lewis County, Virginia and third married Kiziah Baccus in Harrison County, 10 February 1848. 9) Peter Stutler born about 1806 in Virginia and died after 1880. He married Margaret (Peggy) Richards 27 March 1831 in Harrison County, Virginia. 10) Mary Stutler was born about 1808 and died about 1858 in Virginia. She married Nimrod Frasure (Frazier), son of Nimrod Frasure and Sudna Hughes, 27 September 1827 in Harrison County. 11) Sarah Stutler born about 1808 in Virginia and died after 1880. She married Isaac Prine (Perine) 4 August 1824 in Harrison County, Virginia. 12) Rebecca Stutler was born about 1813 in Virginia and died about 1860. She married Arnold Richards after 1829 in Virginia. If there are dates and locations the marriage records are documented. The same for birth and death dates. Approximate birth and death dates rely on census records. The spouses with the exceptions of Rebecca's and Peter's were listed in the indenture. I do try to document my work and realizing census records aren't always accurate try to use them only as a source.
