This line starts with Jonas Preston ca.1600-1669 of
West Riding, Yorkshire. Jonas' son, Jonas Jr. married Sarah Unknown and their son William
of Bradley in Coverdale, Yorkshire, England was the immigrant to America. William came to
Pennsylvania with his wife Jane Deyn in 1718 with their children, John, William and
Jonas Preston. The family belonged to the "New Garden Monthly Meeting of
Friends" (Quaker). The children of William Preston, Jr. 1708-1766 were John, Martha, Joseph,
Sarah, Jonas, Mary and Ruth Preston. William was a stone mason in Bucks County, PA.
Joseph Preston b.1-11-1748 d.6-1-1810, fifth child and only son of
William Preston Jr. and Deborah Chesman, was born on the family farm at Buckingham, Bucks
Co., PA and was less than 2 years old when his mother died. Joseph married on 1-17-1770
Rebecca (orig. spelling Rebeckah) Bills b.11-30-1744 d.3-7-1790 of Shrewsbury, Monmouth
Co., NJ, dau. of Hersham Bills and Sarah Gardner and granddaughter of Nathaniel Bills.
They were solemnized in Buckingham Meeting House. Joseph lived on the family farm for 15
years and then sold it and moved to Chester Co., PA. and bought a farm from then on known
as "Prestonville", located at Londongrove, between West Grove and Avondale.
Joseph and Rebecca along with some other members of the Preston family were buried at the
West Grove Friends Meeting. After Rebecca's death, Joseph m. Anna Samms b.5-2-1761
d.4-19-1836, dau. of Nathaniel Samms and Ann Kirk. Joseph and Rebecca had 9 children.
Joseph and Anna had 2 children, the second died in infancy. Children of Joseph and Rebecca
were:
- William Preston b.11-6-1770 d.5-26-1839 married on 10-11-1791 Mary
Moore b.6-3-1769 d.4-8-1844 and moved to Maryland and settled in Cecil County in about
1792. William was the first of the family to establish a home in Maryland. They were
located 3 miles east of Conowingo, near Porters Bridge on Octoraro Creek. Mary was the
dau. of Joseph and Jane Moore. They became members of the Nottingham Monthly Meeting.
William and Mary were interred at Octoraro Meeting. William and Mary had one son:
- Joseph Preston b.1-14-1795 d.5-4-1869 m. on 10-18-1815 Rebecca Reynolds
b.2-1-1796 d.7-7-1868, dau. of Jacob Reynolds and Esther Taylor of West Nottingham. They
lived most of their life at Octoraro and they had 8 daughters and one son:
- Mary Moore Preston b.9-11-1816 d.9-18-1879 m. on 2-16-1843 Joshua King.
- Esther Reynolds Preston b.4-15-1818 d.12-17-1886 m. Unknown.
- Anna H. Preston b.4-4-1820 d.2-4-1850 m. on 12-30-1842 Chalkley B. Cutler.

- Jonas Preston b.10-22-1772 d.3-23-1863, second child of Joseph and
Rebecca Bills Preston, married on 6-15-1798 Elizabeth Brown b.2-22-1774 d.1-24-1852, dau.
of Alexander Brown. Elizabeth was the sister of Sarah Brown who married Isaac Wilson, son
of Martha (Preston) Wilson and grandson of William Preston, Jr.. He moved his family to
Maryland in 1813 and settled one mile east of Conowingo and two miles west of the farm
where his brother, William, had already lived for 21 years. It was here that the last
three of his 9 children were born. Jonas and Elizabeth had 4 sons and 5 daughters:

Stewart of Salem, NJ. Isaac and Mary lived at Octoraro, Maryland where they had 3 sons and
a daughter:

Preston and Mary Stewart, m. on 9-9-1869 Helen Woodward b.6-9-1851 d.3-15-1926, dau. of
Jacob Woodrow and Mary Clayton. She was born at Rising Sun and died at Colora, MD. Isaac
and Helen lived for 41 years in Colora, MD. They had 6 sons and 5 daughters:

PA. Amos died in Colora, Cecil Co., MD where they lived for many years. They had 6

Bonsall b.9-26-1846 d.9-7-1896 dau. of Thomas L. Bonsall and Naomi P. Hunt. Eliza was born
in Philadelphia and died at Lambertville, NJ. They had no children who survived birth.

Webb. Florence was born in Trenton, NJ and died in Swarthmore, PA. They had one son:

b.2-2-1902 d.xxxx, dau. of Irvin L. and Kate S. Lautenbacher. They lived at Crafton, PA

Preston. Joseph and Melissa had 3 sons and 4 daughters:

Ypsilanti, MI, a dau. of Stephen Hicks and Rhoda Truman. They lived in Grand Rapids, MI.
- Clara Preston b.4-17-1863 d.2-26-1928 m. on 8-21-1887 Benjamin Slade at Parnell, MI.
- Volney Preston b.6-15-1865 d.3-16-1904, unmarried.

Preston and Elizabeth Brown, m. ca.1836 Thomas Clarkson Cook b.1815 d.10-30-1882 of
Pleasant Grove, Lancaster County, PA, son of William Cook and Susanna Cutler. Both Eliza
and Thomas were buried at Penn Hill Friends Meeting.
- Philena Preston b.12-2-1820 d.8-12-1851 m. on 2-28-1839 Franklin Cook of Little Britain
Township, Chester Co., PA. Franklin was the brother of her sister Eliza's husband, Thomas
Cook.

- David Preston b.9-2-1774 d.3-29-1854 m. on 9-2-1797 Judith Scott
Hollingsworth b.12-21-1776 d.8-29-1845, dau. of Isaac Hollingsworth and Hannah Scott.
(Hannah was the dau. of Timothy and Sarah Scott of New Castle, Delaware.) David was born
on the family farm in Bucks Co., PA and when he was 11 years old he moved with his family
to a new homestead, "Prestonville", in Chester Co., PA. David married Judith in
1797 and they remained in Prestonville for 9 years. In 1806 they moved to Maryland, buying
a farm near Jerusalem Mills. David acquired a farm known as "Cecil's Adventure"
(near Fallston, Md.) by deed dated 10-27-1817. He lived there till his death 37 years
later. David and Judith had 7 children:

- Eliza Preston b.11-29-1799 d.3-5-1803.
- Hannah Preston b.11-3-1801 d.2-7-1840.
- Silvester Bills Preston b.8-23-1804 d.2-23-1852 m. Annie West.
They moved west and had several children but no record.
- Rachel Preston b.5-2-1807 d.12-28-1877 m. William Rodham b.8-1805 d.10-29-1886 (his
second wife). Rachel and William had 3 children:
- Olivia Rodham lived near Nelson, N.H. and her home was called "Headlong Hall".
Olivia is buried there and the library was dedicated to her..
- Isaac Rodham played a guitar in a musical trio along with John Lester on the banjo and
"Bert" Preston 1856-1932 playing violin.
- Vickers Rodham was said to be "half-witted" and lived for years with Edmond
Preston's son, Harry 1847-1935. Vickers died in a Home.
- Edmond Preston b.9-14-1814 d.3-16-1893 m. Phebe Hannah Hoskins 1821-1909, dau. of
Nathaniel Hoskins 1774-1840. Edmond and Phebe lived at "Cecils Adventure". They
celebrated their 50th wedding aniversary in 1890. Both are buried in Little Falls Friends
burial ground. Edmond and Phebe had 8 children. Go to Edmond

- Deborah Preston, 7th child of David Preston and Judith Hollingsworth, b.11-24-1817
d.3-29-1895, unmarried. Deborah taught school and later in life lived with niece Judith
(Preston) Hoopes and helped raise her children.

and Elinor Smith of Londongrove. Amos and Margaret had 9 children:

- Ann Preston b.12-1-1813 d.4-18-1872. Dr. Ann Preston was a prominent physician and
founder of the Woman's Hospital in Philadelphia.
