(* The date of birth for Matthew Rhea is somewhat questionable, although most researchers take it to be 1796. The family bible shows he died in 1870 at the age of 76, his tombstone shows the dates of 22 Feb 1796 to 10 April 1870. One or the other is wrong. I plan to leave it as is because I show 1794 on several different pages and would be difficult to correct or change all of them.) Picture of Matthew and his wife Mary "Polly" Looney Rhea shows dates for Matthew as 2-23-1796 to 4-7-1870.

Matthew Rhea V b.2-22-1794 or 2-23-1796 d.4-10-1870, son of Jane Preston and Matthew Rhea, married Mary 'Polly' Looney b.6-10-1804 d.11-11-1884 of Sullivan Co., Tenn. on 12-13-1818 and moved to West Tennessee in 1836. Mary Looney was the daughter of Abram Looney b.~1780 d.1841 and Elizabeth Gammon 1786-1838 and granddaughter of Col. David Looney and Mary McClelland. Matthew made a new map of the state of Tennessee based on actual surveys. (See Story of Matthew) Matthew and Mary Looney had 13 children.:

Margaret Rhea b.1-25-1820 d.5-17-1880 married twice. First to Nicholas Long and they had one child.

Nicholas M. Long II (1849-1931), a Presbyterian Minister of Memphis, TN, married Shirley Wilson and they had 7 children:

Elizabeth Looney Rhea b.3-4-1822 d. 6-8-1892, second child of Matthew and Mary Looney, married on 12-22-1840 John Rhea b. 5-31-1811 d. 3/8-24-1862 a cousin, and brother of James Dysart Rhea who married her sister Margaret. These two brothers were sons of William and Elizabeth Breden Rhea. Elizabeth Looney and John Rhea had 9 children.:

William Abraham Rhea b.5/30/1844 in Jonesborough, TN d.3/24/1921 married twice. First on 2/11/1869 in Dancyville, Haywood Co. TN to Mary 'Mollie' Rhea Irvin b.1/6/1846 d.12/19/1896 in Somerville, Fayette Co. TN and they had 7 children. Mary Irvin was the daughter of Montgomery Irvin and Frances Rhea. (His second wife was Louise Smyth Edmondson dau. of William Campbell Edmondson and Susan E. Rhea. William had no children by Louise.)
