Samuel Rhea 1769-1848

Sources for the following data are Annie Rhea Bruce (email link) who extracted data from "Notable Southern Families" and Kim Smalley (web page link) who extracted data from Ed Foley. Where there are conflicts I show a question mark or make a statement. Also, many more of my cousins were added thanks to Robert E. Rhea.

Samuel Rhea, first child of Rev. Joseph Rhea to be born in this country, b.1769 in Maryland d.12/11/1848 in Sullivan Co., TN. Samuel married Nancy Breden b.1776 d.1/25/1856 on 9/24/1801 in Washington Co., VA. Both Samuel and Nancy are buried in the Blountville Cemetery, Blountville, Sullivan Co., TN. (Samuel and Nancy would be my great great grandparents.)

3. John Nancy Rhea b.4/24/1805 d.5/2/1876 m. on 1/17/1837 Ruth M. Rockhold (sister of Mary Rockhold who married William Rhea.) b.3/20/1821 d.9/30/1892. Ruth was the dau. of William Rockhold and Harriet Netherland. John was a farmer who owned a large plantation of hundreds of acres. He was also a Presbyterian minister. They were both born and died in Blountville, Sullivan Co., TN. John and Ruth had 8 children:

Harriet Nancy Rhea b.6-15-1851 d.7-31-1929 m. on 10-23-1873 Rev. Lemuel Milburn Cartright b.8-11-1848 d.6-18-1942. Both were born in Sullivan Co., TN. Harriet died in Spring City, Rhea Co., TN and Lemuel died in Roane Co., TN. His body was interred in Spring City, TN. Lemuel was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He was also a carpenter and farmer. Harriet and Lemuel had 8 children:

Nathan Rhea Cartright Jr. b.6-3-1906 d.1-25-1967 m. six times, the last wife being Eva Norman. Nathan was born in Pocahontas, Tazewell Co., VA and died in Nashville, TN. He is interred in National Cemetery, Nashville, TN. There was no issue by any of Nathan's six wives.
• Amy Frances Lois Cartright b.5-21-1911 d.7-1992 m. 5-21-1936 John Robinson Jr. 9-29-1891 d.10-14-1967. John was born in Pittsburgh, PA the son of John Robinson and Eleanor Nuttall. After John's death, Amy resided in St. Petersburg, Florida. She was a dedicated genealogist and historian.
Lena Mae Cartright b.5-25-1877 d.6-13-1969 m. William Munsey Blair in Russell Co., VA on 8-3-1911. They had no issue.
3. William Joseph Cartright b.7-27-1879 d.9-17-1906. He was kicked by a horse which caused his death. He was not married.
4. Fannie McCord Cartright b.8-25-1882 d.8-10-1933. (Spoden says she died in 1923). She never married.
Robert Carlock Cartright b.10-11-1884 d.8-2-1959 m. in 1913 Lucille Hogue "Lucy" Brown. Lucy was born in Radford, VA. Robert and Lucy had 2 children:
1. Milburn Jonathan Cartright b.8-25-1914 m. Gertrude Kelly. (May have had another wife named Ann.) Milburn and Gertrude had one child:
• Jonathan Cartright.
2. Dorothy Ruth Cartright b.5-27-1917 m. on 9-3-1939 Richard Crawford Wilbur. Dorothy and Richard were divorced in 1947. Dorothy then married William Wright Anderson on 9-11-1948. William was born in Rockwood, TN. Dorothy and Richard had 2 children:

Joseph S. Rhea 1861-1906 m. M. Adeline 'Addie' Smith 1868-1945. Addie is interred in Sullivan Co., TN in the Muddy Creek Baptist Cemetery. Addie and Joseph had 4 children:

• Ezra Rhea m. Joseph Erskin Rhea. (Ezra is listed as Ursa or Ezra or Asa.)

Margaret "Maggie" Ruth Rhea b.5-15-1865 d.12-13-1905 m. in 1880 William Rogers Hull b.2-28-1845 d.4-16-1921. William was the son of Noah Hull and Lucinda Webb. Both were born in and died in Sullivan Co., TN. and both were interred in the Muddy Creek Cemetery. Margaret and William had 3 children:
• John H. Hull b.6-24-1888 d.4-16-1921 m. Nettie Unknown. John was born in Sullivan Co., TN but died in California. Nettie was possibly a second wife but no children by either marriage.
