John Preston 1764-1827
Smithfield Prestons

John Preston b.5-12-1764 d.3-27-1827, second child and first son of William Preston and Susanna Smith, born at "Greenfield", baptized by Rev. Caldwell. He was a member of the Virginia Legislature for many years and was Treasurer of Virginia many years. He married twice, first to Miss Mary Radford of Richmond, Va., and second to Mrs. Mayo, formerly Miss Elizabeth Carrington. He died at "Smithfield". John Preston and Mary Radford had 5 children:

  1. William Preston married Elizabeth Cabell of Lynchburg, Va. They then moved to Missouri. They had 9 children:
  2. John Breckenridge Preston, second child of John Preston and Mary Radford, married Susan Jordon (1807-1868) of Rockbridge, Va. in 1825. They had 5 children:
  3. Elizabeth Madison Preston, third child of John Preston and Mary Radford married Charles Johnston, a lawyer and member of Congress. They had 2 children:
  4. Susan M. Preston, fourth child of John Preston and Mary Radford, married her cousin, William Radford. They had 3 children:
  5. Elizabeth Radford Preston married secondly, Col. John Munford of Williamsburg, Va and they had one child:

  6. Sarah Preston, 5th child of John Preston and Mary Radford, married Henry Morton Bowyer, a lawyer of Botetourt Co., Va. They had 5 children:
  7. John Preston, second child of Col. Wm. Preston and Susanna Smith, married secondly Mrs. Elizabeth Carrington Mayo. Elizabeth was born xxxx and died 10-10-1839. They had one son:

    1. Edward Carrington Preston b.ca.1813 who married Miss Hawkins of Ky. He died of yellow fever in New Orleans on 10-15-1837 at 24 years of age. They had one child:
      • Edward Carrington Preston II b.ca.1835 who became a planter in St. Landry Parish, La. Edward II was unmarried.
