In the Beginning ...
Sigi's recent project ‘Icons of Jazz’
was borne out of her love for jazz which allows her to
immerse herself in the subject. It started with a
photo she had taken of her husband playing one of
his instruments. She converted it into a pastel
piece of art. This gave her the idea of painting
jazz artists she listened to dating back to her teen
years in Germany. Before any paper gets touched
with her pastels, she makes notes of her subject from
memory, researches jazz history books, and lastly
Wikipedia. For accuracy on painting instruments,
microphones, piano, she uses her husbands and her own
instruments as a guide or checks through music
catalogs. At some point, she traveled to Austin to
the Guitar Center and asked the clerk for permission to
photograph a Neumann U87 microphone for Billie Holiday’s
painting. Once she has a clear picture in her
mind, she draws many sketches in pencil . The next
step; mostly using black or dark pastel paper, she uses
a white charcoal pencil and sketches her subject, and
finally paints. While she paints, she listens to
her subject’s music, immersing herself in the
personality and expression of the musicians.
Sigi also developed the skill of graphic design which is evident in the series ‘Icons of Jazz’ where the instruments and/or microphones are painted often in precise detail.
