Bass Fishing Overview

The state of West Virginia offers almost limitless bass fishing opportunities.    The King & Rooster try as much as we can (although never enough) to take advantage of some of those opportunities every spring and summer.  Primarily, we hit the rivers and streams to wade or canoe after smallmouth.  While we occasionally will hit an impoundment for some largemouth, smallies are our bass of choice.  In the areas where we are able to wade, we consider a smallmouth of 12 - 15 inches to be of a decent size, and most of the following pictures are of bass in that range.

The King with a nice smallmouth taken along the bank.  This smallie hit a hellgrammite.

The Rooster with a about a 13" smallmouth taken along the bank in one of our favorite holes.

The King in a famous K&R shot that shows some of the shoals that are favorite hang-outs for smallmouth.  The King caught this on a black and chartreuse grub.

The Rooster with a decent smallmouth taken in high, murky water.  Some of our best fishing days have occurred on days when the water was high and a cloudy.

The King with a big shallow water bass.  On most days, we will catch rock bass at about a 10 to 1 ratio over smallmouth bass.

The Rooster with a decent bass taken after some clouds moved in.  Quick changes in weather can result in quick changes in bass behavior.

A close-up shot of a typical smallmouth taken where we bass fish.  The state offers much bigger bass but we don't quite have the gear to get at them.

Good shot of the King with a WV smallmouth.

Another close-up of a little bigger WV smallmouth.

The Rooster with a smallie on a sunny day.  Notice he is wearing the coldwater neoprenes.  Sometimes in the spring the water can still be a little cold.

A shot of the King with a dark colored smallmouth taken near some shoals.

The Rooster with one of the nicest basses we have taken in small water.  The brute was around 15" and taken right under an island ledge with a grub.

A rare shot of the K&R in the same frame with a double-shot of bass.

The King with a good bass taken on a pumpkin-seed grub on a hot 2004 July day.

The Rooster with about an average sized smallmouth taken on a day when the water was very low.

The King with 13" smallmouth (a GB hog) taken on a hot and humid June 2005 day.
