However, because of the concern for the spread of disease, the church was not going to allow a funeral service for John C. Swift. Because of family pleas, however, they relented and allowed the mourners to gather. However, they were required to sit three rows and three persons apart in the church pews. (per Roberta Wheelan Clark, 2009) John was buried on 18 February 1919 at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Washington County, IA. John Connell Swift came to the U.S. with his sister Mary in 1850. They travel on a ship named the Great Western and after seven and a half weeks on the seas, docked September 3, 1850 in New York. Their brother, Martin, and sister Bridget, had sailed in 1848, and settled in Albany, NY. John and Mary lived for a short time in New York, and they later emigrated to Knox County, Illinois, and eventually settled in Iowa. In Ireland, the family lived near Gort, and when asked what was the name of the place he called home, John Swift said it was Bally Lee.

The Swifts left Ireland to find a better life. They were very poor, and his children recalled that John Swift often talked about how hungry they had been in Ireland.
