Ralph Hamilton "Spud" Clark was born on 23 March 1923 in Cass County, IL. He was an MP in occupied Japan after the surrender and was stationed in Tokyo. When his unit traveled to Japan, they were aboard a ship by the name of the Marine Serpent. After the war, Ralph compared notes with his brother, Robert, who served as a nightfighter pilot in the US Naval Reserves. Robert recognized the name of the Marine Serpent as a ship in a group assigned to the VF 87 Fighter Squadron for protection.
