Some Pretty Good Guitars

[ Fender P-Bass before ] [ Fender P-Bass after ] [ Epiphone EDS-1275 ] [ Epiphone Genesis ]

I bought the P-bass at Rockin Robin Guitars in Houston. That's also where I got the Les Paul. I used to hang out there all the time, just awed at the sheer number of guitars they had on the wall. The P-bass is a 1973 model, originally natural, that someone butchered. The extra pickguard material near the bridge in the first picture covers an amateur routing cavity for a second pickup. The black paint was streaky and flat looking. I stripped the body, cleaned out the extra cavities and filled them with Bondo, sanded everything down and spray painted it with Ace Hardware Dover White. I added the pickup and bridge covers. I also heat-pressed the neck to straighten it a bit. I played all the bass parts on it for all my songs at SoundClick.

The Epiphone double neck I bought from Elderly Instruments is a well-built reproduction of a Gibson EDS-1275, only about $2,000 cheaper. I've been impressed by the quality of some of the recent Korean-built Epiphones. I've also seen some that were just junk.

The Epiphone Genesis just looked so cool I had to have it. It also sounds and plays great for a Taiwanese guitar. The small toggle switch next to the jack is a coil splitter so you can get single coil sounds. I have a modified Les Paul b-w-b-w-b pickguard I'm going to put on it. I tend to scar the tops of my guitars when I play them.
