FOSTA

In case you didn't know, there's a new law coming called FOSTA. As screwy as it may sound, this law may shut down comments here on the mothership (that aren't really being used anyway, but I digress) in the future.

The intention of FOSTA is to fight sex trafficking. There is nothing wrong with that ideal at all. I don't think anyone outside of sex traffickers would WANT sex trafficking. Let's just all agree that sex trafficking is an awful thing.

This law, again in fighting the scourge of sex trafficking, removes pieces of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. This puts the websites as criminally and civilly liable instead of on individuals. This increase in liability, in turn, has made me seriously question whether or not
Disqus can still be used on my drill design site.

By hosting comments, I am essentially placing myself in a trap just waiting to be sprung. I cannot afford civil liability. I cannot afford jail time. I don't think anyone can.

Therefore, and until further notice, any and all comments on this site that are not mine are going to be moderated. This decision is not a good one I made. This decision is not the decision I want to tell you. This decision is, unfortunately, the decision I have to make and the one I have to tell you.

I really don't want to turn on heavy-handed comment moderation, either. However, due to FOSTA, it just unfortunately has to happen. :(
