ATX Enjoys End-of-Season Lake Party out at Lake Travis

Jonestown, TX — The families of the ATX 7th got a chance to enjoy a great end-of-season party out at Lake Travis the past Saturday.  Tanner, Katrina, and ‘Ship’ invited everyone out to Lake Travis and the ‘Ship Marina’ for a great day of fun, food, and fellowship.  Folks started arriving at 10am and didn’t leave until after 7pm!  The boys enjoyed the waterfall, pool, lake-trampoline as well as the jet skii and ski boat.  It was great to see the kids out there and conquer their fears as they were being pulled by the ski boat.  Thanks Karen for driving the boat!  Rumor has it that even Coach Campbell and Coach King braved being pulled by the ski tube!  What a great way to end an already outstanding season.

Pflugerville, TX — The Class of 2013 saw one of their own, Jay Byrd, recognized in an article in this weeks Pflugerville Pflag.  The article entitled “Byrd Shines for ATX Hoops,” acknowledges Jay’s outstanding performance in the month of June which helped the team go 13-2 and achieve a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place tournament finish.  The article states how Jay was moved into the starting line-up to help fill the void left by teammate Kofi Asante who was out for 4 weeks.  Congrats to Jay and the ATX 7th team for being acknowledged in such a manner.

ATX 2013 competes in the MAYB Nationals in Wichita, Kansas

Augusta, KS — The ATX Class of 2013 ventured out on their longest road-trip in team history to compete in the MAYB Nationals which would be held in Wichita, Kansas and nearby, surrounding cities.  The 7th grade boy’s division alone consisted of 57 teams from over 13 different states.  The ATX 7th grade team competed tough in what was their first true national tournament since the original team was first formed three years ago.  Some tough game scheduling coupled with some missed opportunities along the way added up to a disappointing outcome for the team but a great experience none the less.  The boys would open up pool play with the 9am game on Friday morning against the South Dakota “Pack.”  ATX would welcome back for the weekend a familiar friend and former ATX player, Jamal Shabazz, who would fill the position left vacant by starting 6’2” center, Tanner Thrift who was out due to injury.  ATX would take for granted their first opponent, a mistake that cost them dearly in their bracket seeding later in the weekend.  ATX got down by 16 early in the 1st half before finally waking up.  They pulled to within 11 at halftime and closed the gap even further to 6 points late in the 2nd half on Shabazz’s 18-point team-high effort.  However, ATX foul-trouble and good foul shooting down the stretch by South Dakota would give them the win, 70-64.  ATX’s second pool play game would come against an extremely talented and athletic Memphis Trotter team, a team lasting the weekend and ultimately reaching it to the final championship game and would finish 2nd out of all 57 teams.   ATX would play them tough the entire game, down just 24-21 at halftime.  ATX continued to keep the game close but a tremendous 29 point, individual effort by the Trotter’s star player would help the Trotter’s ultimately seal a victory.  ATX was within 5 points late in the game and was forced to foul to stop the clock.  The Trotters would go 5-8 down the stretch from the charity stripe and would go on to win 63-52.  Shabazz once again led ATX with a tremendous, all-around game, leading ATX in scoring with 24 points.  The 2nd loss left ATX disappointed and hungry for a win, feeling that they could have easily won one if not both of their initial two games.  The final ATX pool-play game would have the Kansas City Bluedogs feel the brunt of ATX’s frustration as ATX would win in a route, 63-41, a game that would see all nine ATX players score.  Josh King had the long ball going early as he connected on a five 3-pointers from downtown for a team high 15 points.  As luck would have it, ATX would have to start this game at 10:00pm on Friday night, the final game of the evening.  ATX players would get into bed after midnight but yet would be asked to travel back to Leon, Kansas to play at 9:00am the very next morning to open bracket play. Their 1-2 pool play record would place them a disappointing 3rd in their pool and would have them open bracket play by facing the higher seeded, TX Plano Run-N-Gun, a talented team that would survive as one of the top 8, undefeated teams in the championship bracket.  ATX hung close the entire game.  The first half was a grind-it-out half, with Plano taking only a 4 point lead.  Run-N-Gun would stretch it to 6 points, only to see ATX make a run and outscore Plano 35-31 in the 2nd half, including tying the game on an exciting, buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Bradley Piper to tie the game 50-50 and send the game into OT.  ATX would commit two costly turnovers in the OT period and unfortunately would go 2-6 from the free throw line during that time which would prove to be the difference in the game.  ATX’s attempt to tie the game with a last second shot goes wayward and ATX would lose 57-54 which would end their MAYB Nationals run.  Jamal Shabazz once again led the team offensively with a game-high 27 points in the loosing effort.

Although it was an obvious, disappointing showing for the ATX 7th grade team, it was a valuable experience that will surely be used as a building block for the future.  The talented squad completes their 3rd successful season with some pretty impressive accomplishments, compiling an overall 47-15 record this season, including five 1st place finishes, three additional 2nd place finishes and a consolation championship.  They played a total of 13 tournaments including tournaments in San Antonio, Houston Kingwood, Denton, and Kansas.  Eight of the 10 players also finished their 7th grade school year with all A’s/B’s or higher on their report card.  Congratulations to the players, parents, and coaches for another great season!  The boys officially end the season in a couple of weeks with a little fun in the sun party at Lake Travis which will include food, fellowship, jet skis and ski boat.

ATX 7th play “Small Ball” and Compete well in Championship Bracket of MAYB/Denton Shoot-out

Denton/Krum, TX — The class of 2013 travelled to Denton, Texas to compete in the MAYB/Denton Summer shoot-out which consisted of 16 teams, including five teams from Oklahoma and one from Louisiana.  It was a competitive tournament that featured some talented and athletic teams.  ATX would have to rely heavily on their superior perimeter shooting and guard play to overcome the absence of injured starting center Tanner Thrift and reserve backup center Andrew Hagen.  ATX played well throughout most of the weekend, despite landing in what was clearly the most competitive pool.  ATX opened pool play with a game against the Oklahoma Explosion, the ultimate tournament champion.  ATX held close early, only being down by 5 at half but the Explosion’s size and length ultimately prevailed as ATX lost 48-33.  ATX would bounce back well, winning their next two pool games to capture 2nd place of their pool which would place them in the upper championship bracket.  Their second pool play game came against the OKC Elite, the ultimate champion of the consolation bracket.  ATX would defeat the Elite 41-31 in a game that featured Gonzales, Piper, and King going 9-10 down the stretch from the charity stripe to secure the win.  Next saw ATX defeat Texas Top Prospects, a fast and quick team out of McKinney, Texas.  ATX would see Kofi Asante lead the team in scoring with 13 points and would go on to win 45-38 over the Top Prospect team that would eventually claim second place in the consolation bracket.  The 2-1 record vaulted ATX and 7 other teams into the upper championship bracket.  ATX’s first bracket-play game would be against a fast and aggressive Louisiana Kings team that caught ATX off guard.  ATX unfortunately finished up their last Saturday game at 10:45pm and had to play the Kings at 9:00am the next morning and the lack of sleep was apparent.  ATX was never in the game, loosing 74-34 in what would be ATX’s worst defeat of the season.  Josh King led the team in scoring with 14 in the loosing effort.  ATX would bounce back later in the afternoon to face a talented Texas Select 2013 out of Arlington.  ATX managed to get down by 6 at half but a 2nd half rally sparked by Aaron McDaniel, Jalen Campbell, and Ryan Lamb would see a 20-point turn-around.  Texas Select fought back to make it close in the end but ATX holds on to win 44-41 and advance to the consolation championship game of the upper division bracket.  ATX would face the OK Magic who would have superior height against the short-handed ATX squad.  The Magic would capture an early led which they maintained for the duration.  ATX made several short runs and would cut the lead to 2 at one point late in the game.  The Magic would ultimately prevail however, winning 49-44 to capture the consolation championship.  This was an overall good showing for ATX who found themselves undersized against most every team they faced during the weekend.  ATX would continue to see balanced offensive production for most of the weekend, with Byrd(11,10), King(12,14), McDaniel(15,13,12), Asante(13), and Piper(12,10) all scoring in double-figures.  Kofi Asante played heavy minutes for the tournament and was relied upon heavily, being the only ATX player over 6’0” that was available for the weekend.  His low-post interior play was critical to ATX’s success for the weekend.  The Class of 2013 will take their 46-12 record and will travel to Wichita, Kansas as they conclude their successful season by participating in the MAYB Nationals tournament.  Good Luck ATX!

ATX 2013 dealt tough blow, lose 6’2” starter Tanner Thrift for remainder of season due to injury

Pflugerville, TX — The ATX 7th team was dealt an unfortunate blow as starting 6’2” center, Tanner Thrift, suffered a broken ankle over the weekend on a freak jet-ski accident which will sideline him for the remainder of the season.  Tanner had evolved into the team’s leading rebounder and one of the team’s better interior defenders.  This was an unfortunate setback for the team as they look to compete in both the competitive Denton Shoot-out next weekend and the MAYB/Nationals in Wichita, Kansas later this month.  _____________________________________________________________________

ATX 2013 enjoys Team Swim Party at Blackhawk Pool

Pflugerville, TX — The ATX 7th grade team enjoyed the weekend off and a leisurely morning at the Blackhawk pool this past Saturday.  The boys spent some time “being boys” and just hanging out at the pool and downing some Gattis pizza.  The boys look to finish up their great season as the look toward their home stretch and their final few tournaments.  They take their 43-9 record and will head to Denton, TX for their next tournament scheduled for the weekend of July 18-20.  They will conclude their season by venturing off to Wichita, Kansas to compete in MAYB Nationals at the end of July.  Go ATX!

ATX Team Members attend Brandy Perryman Basketball Camp and take Awards

Pflugerville, TX — The ATX 7th grade team had several of its members get the opportunity to attend the Brandy Perryman Shooting camp the week of July 7th.  Kofi Asante, Tanner Thrift, Andrew Hagen, Bradley Piper, Josh King, Jalen Campbell, and Ryan Lamb all got the chance to participate in the fun-filled camp.  Several of the ATX 6th and ATX 9th grade teams sent players to the camp as well.  All 7th grade players participated in the higher, most-competitive, NBA division.  Several ATX players were recognized for their accomplishments during the week.  Kofi led his team to the overall tournament championship for the NBA division.  Tanner’s team won the 3-on-3 overall championship.  Josh King took top honors in two of the three individual contests:  3-point shooting and “Hot Shot.”  Even the siblings of the ATX 2013 got into the action.  Zanbria Asante, Taylor Ann King, and Jeremy Campbell all attended the camp and landed on the same team in the NCAA division.  They helped lead their team to the overall tournament championship.  Congrats to everyone!

ATX 7th defeat Westlake Hoops in Scrimmage Game, 59-57

Pflugerville, TX — The ATX 7th grade team invited Coach Morse and his Westlake Hoops to join their practice for an informal scrimmage game this past Tuesday which was held in the back gym at Connally High School.  ATX would still be without injured players Ryan Lamb and Jalen Campbell but they welcomed back Kofi Asante who has been out for 5 weeks at the C5 Youth Leadership camp in Killeen.  This was a good, competitive scrimmage game that benefited both teams.  ATX grabbed an early lead, only to see Westlake battle back to keep it close.  Isaak Gonzales made a crucial steal in the last minute of the game and Aaron McDaniel and Jay Byrd made some clutch baskets down the stretch to clinch the win for ATX.  ATX was led offensively by Jay Byrd (16), followed by Kofi Asante and Aaron McDaniel who each had 12 points for the game.

ATX 2013 make a Strong 2nd place showing in MAYB/San Antonio Summer Showcase Despite Injuries and a Reduced Squad

San Antonio, TX — The ATX 7th grade team ventured out on their 2nd road trip of the season which landed them just south of Austin in the Alamo City.  ATX 2013 would participate in the MAYB/Super Summer Showcase which featured 11 teams from San Antonio, New Braunfels, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Killeen, Poth, Seguin, Smithson Valley, and Pflugerville.  The games would be played out in Cole High School located on the Fort Sam Houston federal military base in San Antonio which was the home high school of future hall of famer Shaquille O’Neil.  ATX was determined to have a strong showing despite having starter Kofi Asante and Jalen Campbell both out for the weekend.   ATX opened tournament play against the SA Wildcats, a team that had managed to “sneak up” and steal a victory from ATX earlier in the year.  ATX would seek to right that ship by taking an early lead against the Wildcats and never looking back.  ATX would cruise to a 33-24 victory in a game that saw Jay Byrd lead the team offensively with 10 points.  Next up for the 7th grade squad was the Albuquerque Black Hawks, a talented team from New Mexico that featured a strong 6’4”, 225 lb interior post player.  Tanner Thrift played an outstanding game defensively, limiting the big guy to scoring just 12 points.  ATX had the game won initially but some questionable clock-operator errors allowed the game to be extended and gave time for a last-second shot by the Black Hawks which tied the game and sent it into overtime.   ATX remained focus and re-gained control of the game during the over-time period.  ATX would go on to win 35-33 and seal the victory.   Tanner Thrift was exceptional down low on the blocks and came up huge defensively and on the boards.  ATX was led offensively by Isaak Gonzales with 11 points.  The next team to fall victim to ATX would be the Smithson Valley Rangers.  ATX would grab an 11 point lead at halftime and maintain that point differential for most of the 2nd half by playing very efficient basketball.  Smithson Valley managed to hit a few desperation 3’s to make it close at the end but Isaak Gonzales and fellow ATX teammates would make clutch free throws down the stretch and would come out victorious, 57-47.   ATX would play a third game Saturday, later that evening against the Holy Fames, a young private school team from San Antonio.  It was apparent very early on that the Holy Flames would be no match for ATX’s superior inside-outside game as ATX would cruise to an easy win – 65 to 36.  ATX would enjoy a balanced, offensive attack with four players scoring in double-figures:  Josh King (11), Tanner Thrift (13), Ryan Lamb (13), and Jay Byrd (13).  The game would prove costly, however, in that Ryan Lamb would get injured late on a flagrant, intentional foul on a break away layup which caused him to land awkwardly on his shooting hand,  severely spraining his wrist.  He would miss the next day’s championship game due to this injury, leaving ATX with a bench of only two players.  The win over Holy Flames would  catapulted the 4-0 ATX 2013 team into what essentially would be the championship game against an undefeated Texas D1 Ambassador team from Killeen, a tall squad with a formidable front-line which included three players over 6 foot.   ATX would draw first-blood, jumping on Killeen 12-4 to open the game.  But extremely early foul trouble and the already shorten ATX bench would eventually catch up with ATX.  ATX would find themselves only losing 15-14 at half but that would be as close as they would be for the remainder of the game.  Killeen’s size and depth was too much to overcome as Killeen would control the offensive glass and make their free throws down the stretch, going on to beat ATX 36-26 in what was a low-scoring, grind-it-out style game.   Josh King led ATX in scoring with 8 points in the loosing effort.  All things considering, it was a solid showing for the weekend for ATX who now extends their season record to an impressive 42-9 overall record.  Tanner Thrift, Jay Byrd, and Isaak Gonzales really stepped up their games for the weekend in the absence of several players.  ATX would continue to see balance offensive scoring, enjoying five different high scorers over the weekend with six players scoring in double-figures.  ATX 2013 looks forward to having their entire squad back and healthy for the remainder of the season which includes road trips to Denton, Texas and a final tournament trip to the Wichita, Kansas for the MAYB Nationals tournament.

ATX 2013 Participate in MAYB/Georgetown Summer Classic, compile 5-1 record

Georgetown, TX — The ATX Class of 2013 participated in the MAYB/Georgetown Summer Classic tournament over the weekend which consisted  of twelve different teams in the 7th grade division from Austin,  California, Belton/Temple, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Poth,  Georgetown, New Braunfels, and Pflugerville.   ATX was placed in what was clearly the stronger of the two 6-team pools.  ATX unfortunately stumbled right out of the shoot in their first game, getting behind by 13 at halftime against a much improved Rampage team.  ATX closed the gap to 6 at one point in the 2nd half but could not come any closer.  ATX had an unusually difficult time at the free throw line, shooting only 39% which essentially took them out of contention.  ATX loses 44-32 as Rampage would go 7-8 down the stretch at the charity stripe to secure the win.  ATX bounced back very well after losing to Rampage, the ultimate tournament champion.  ATX would run the table and win their next 5 games, including a thrilling 1 point victory over a very talented California team.   ATX’s 2nd pool-play game victory came at the expense of the Belton/Temple Kings (White) by a score of 69-28.   Everyone got into the scoring action early with Piper, King, McDaniel, and Byrd all scoring in double figures.  Next up was a pool-play victory over the Liberty Hill Wildcats by the score of 62-43.   Byrd, King, and McDaniel again led the team in scoring with each in double-figures.  Next up was the exciting 1 point thriller over the California Hilltoppers who featured a 6’4” low-post player.   ATX used the 3-ball to edge out the close victory.  ATX would see five players (Gonzales, Lamb, King, McDaniel, and Piper) combine for nine made 3’s.  The Poth Pirates were up next but they were no match for ATX’s balanced, offensive machine.  ATX would coast to a 57-40 win with 8 of 9 players getting into the scoring action. The strange tournament format unfortunately did not allow for true bracket play after pool play so ATX would have to settle for playing BTK (Red) for overall 3rd place in the tournament.  ATX took a 15 point lead into the last 2 minutes of the game but let BTK score the last 6 points.  ATX hangs on to win 43-34.  Overall it was another strong showing for ATX, especially when you consider that starter Kofi Asant was absent from the lineup and that defensive specialist Jalen Campbell was injured for much of the weekend.   This extends the team’s season record to an impressive 38-8 with ATX winning 19 of their last 20 games.

Asante and Byrd have Accomplishments Recognized by Pflugerville Independent School District

Pflugerville, TX — The ATX Class of 2013 saw two of their own honored by PISD as the year closed.  Kofi Asante was recognized by the Kelly Lane MS coaching staff as the most outstanding 7th grade basketball player at Kelly Lane.  Congrats to Kofi and his family for receiving such an award.  Teammate Jay Byrd got one up on Kofi in that Jay was recognized and awarded with the “Most Outstanding 7th grade Athlete” for all of Pflugerville Middle School.  As starting quarterback, Jay led the Panthers to an undefeated season and the district championship.  In basketball Jay started and helped lead PMS to a share of the district championship.  Both Kofi and Jay were fortunate enough to qualify in the district track meet at the end of the season where both Kofi and Jay finishing with several top 3 finishes with Jay also setting records in the hurdles.   Congrats again to both Kofi and Jay and their families for competing well and representing the ATX organization in such an outstanding manner.

Kofi Asante Honored with Selection to Prestigious C5 Youth Leadership Camp

Pflugerville, TX — Kofi Asante was recently honored by being selected to attend the prestigious C5 Youth Leadership Camp for five weeks during the summer of 2008.  This is a national camp that has camps in Atlanta, Los Angeles, New England, and Texas.  Admission into the camp is highly competitive and reserved for aspiring young youths that are selected based on their leadership qualities, academic achievements, and community involvement.  Kofi was nominated by the Kelly Lane faculty and was fortunate enough to survive the lengthy selection process to be chosen as a camp attendee.  The C5 camp tries to instill in its campers:  Community-Focused, Character-Driven, Challenge Ready, College-bound, and Committed to a better future.  Although Kofi will miss the entire month of June from ATX, including two tournaments, he will no doubt enjoy a great experience at camp C5.  Congrats Kofi for this outstanding achievement!

ATX 2013 continues 14-game winning streak, wins 2nd annual Summer Sizzlin’ Shootout

Austin, TX — The ATX 7th grade team hosted their 2nd annual Summer Sizzlin’ Shootout which was a Friday night and Saturday tournament that was held at Hyde Park Baptist church.  Thanks to all the parents who worked to help host our tournament!  The tournament format included a single pool-play game followed by seeded bracket play.  Eight teams competed including ATX,  San Antonio Rebels, Texas Ambassadors (Austin), San Antonio Mustangs, Pflugerville Ballerz, A-tex Wildcats, Hays Rebels, and Georgetown Fury (Navy).   ATX faced the Pflugerville Ballerz in initial pool play.  The newly-formed Ballerz held close early on but ultimately were no match for ATX’s size and superior interior game.  ATX won 44-25 with Jay Byrd leading the way offensively with 14 points.  Bracket play games started early Saturday as ATX would face and defeat the Hays Rebels, 71-44.  ATX played an extremely efficient offensive game against Hays with four players scoring in double figures, with Byrd, Piper, and McDaniel with 13 points each and Asante with a game-high 20 points.  Next would see ATX face the San Antonio Rebels, a quick, feisty team that had actually beaten ATX in the Sizzlin shootout in 2007.  ATX sought revenge and jumped on the rebels early, leading 40-17 at halftime and going on to win 52-36.  Josh King had the jumper going early and led the team with 16 points.  The win over the SA Rebels sent ATX to the championship game to face the Texas Ambassadors who had managed to squeak out a very close win in their semi-finals game against the San Antonio Mustangs, a very good and well coached team that many thought would be the team that would face ATX in the championship game Saturday evening.  ATX grabbed the lead early over the Ambassadors and led by 9 at halftime.  ATX 2013 used their strong bench in the 2nd half to extend the lead and capture a 15-point win, 42-57 to win the overall tournament championship.  It was a dominating performance by ATX, with ATX winning each game by an average 19 points/game.  Balance offensive scoring and unselfish play continued to be the hallmark for this team as five of eight players scored in double figures at one point during the weekend.  Jay Byrd, Kofi Asante, and Bradley Piper each averaged 10 pts/game for the weekend with Aaron McDaniel averaging 9 pts/game.  Congratulations should go out to the boys who played extremely well even though they were playing a little short handed without both Andrew Hagen and Ryan Lamb for the entire weekend.  This extends the winning streak for ATX 2013 to 14 games, the longest in the team’s history.   Next up for the dominating ATX squad is the Georgetown/MAYB tournament June 20-22nd.

ATX 7th Enjoy Pizza while Watching the Inspirational Movie “Facing the Giant’s”

Pflugerville, TX — The families of the 7th grade ATX team enjoyed a fun-filled Friday evening full of pizza, football, and fellowship at the Blackhawk Amenity Center in Pflugerville.  The evening ended with each of the boys and their families watching the inspirational movie “Facing the Giants”.   The families all enjoyed watching the inspirational movie and were all reminded that when you try and honor God with your life and serve Him in everything that you do then nothing is impossible.

Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me.

We were all reminded that we all have our own “Giants” in each of our lives.  How do we cope?  How do we face our fears?  Who is our ever-present hope in time of need?  There is only One who is able to deliver us, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 41:10  -- Fear Thou not, for I am with thee.  Be not dismayed for I am thy God.  I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yeah I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Thanks to all the parents who helped make our evening a great success!

1st Place Champs in USSSA Memorial Day Run-N-Slam

Buda, TX—The Class of 2013 continued their winning ways over the Memorial Day weekend, going 5-0 as they participated and won the overall 1st place championship in the USSSA Memorial Day Run-N-Slam event that was held in Buda, TX.   Pool play games begin with ATX facing and defeating “G-unit,” an athletic team out of Del Valle.   ATX took control of the game early on and never looked back, going on to win 53-27.  Their next pool play victory came at the expense of G’town Fury (Orange) who was no match for ATX’s interior post-play game.  Asante, Byrd, and Thrift all scored in double figures with Thrift scoring a game-high and season-high 17 points in the lop-sided 63-11 victory.  Despite going 2-0 in pool play and winning their pool, ATX found themselves having to play the early 8am game Sunday against a much improved Round Rock Hustlaz team.  ATX seized an early 13-4 lead and would hold on to claim a 63-52 victory.  ‘B’ Piper led the team offensively with a game-high 16 points against Round Rock.  Next saw ATX defeating the Hays Scrubs in a 60-40 bracket-play contest, a game that again saw ATX take advantage of their size and interior post play.  Kofi Asante would score a game-high and season high 17 points to help ATX coast to an easy victory.  The victory would launch ATX into the championship game against a young, tough San Antonio Magic team who would compete well despite having several 6th graders on their squad.  ATX would claim an 8-point lead at half-time, however, the Magic would claw their way back in the 2nd half to close the gap, taking advantage of the fact that ATX had to play an additional early-morning game.  The Magic would come up a little short however as ATX hangs on to win 51-47 and win the championship of the tournament.  Isaak Gonzales would lead the team in scoring with 10 points against the Magic.  It was another great team effort that saw all team members contribute in various, different ways.  ATX continued to give opponents trouble with their balance offensive scoring.  ATX saw each team member score a minimum of 7 points during the weekend.  ATX enjoyed eight different players scoring in double figures for the weekend:  Gonzales(10), King(10), Lamb (10), McDaniel(11), Byrd(11), Piper (16), Thrift (17), and Asante(17).  While ATX enjoyed a great offensive production for the weekend, scoring an average of 58 points a game, it was their tough team-defense and rebounding that gave them the edge over their competition.  Congrats to the players and parents!  Next up for the talented team is the ATX-hosted Summer Sizzlin Shootout on June 6-7th.  See the attached Link for more details.

Austin, TX—The ATX 7th grade team helped host the MAYB/Greater Austin event that was held at Johnston High School over Mother’s Day weekend.  This was an eight team event whose format included pool play followed by bracket play with teams including Cedar Park, Dripping Springs, Georgetown, San Antonio, Austin, and Pflugerville.   ATX started the weekend strong, going 3-0 in pool play with convincing wins of 55-14 over DS Flight and then 61-18 over SA Jr. Select.   Their 3rd win came at the expense of the TX Ambassadors (Austin) by the score of 53-46.  ATX claimed the top seed in their pool and went onto play San Antonio Elite who was a tall and athletic team who played aggressive man-2-man defense.  ATX jumped out on them quick with a 10-2 early lead on which they increased to a 14 point lead later in the 1st half.  Elite would crawl back into it in the 2nd half to within 4 but that was as close as they would get.  ATX holds on and goes on to win 40-36.  The win over the Elite would vault ATX into the championship game where they would face the Georgetown Fury (Navy).   Georgetown used their size and good team work to grab a 9-point lead in the first half.  ATX would fight back, however, and climb to within 5 at halftime.  The 2nd half would see Jay Byrd “put the team on his back” for a period of 7-8 minutes which helped ATX grab the lead.  The Byrd man seemed to do everything from getting steals, getting rebounds, and going coast-to-coast on the fast break.  Crucial free throw shooting down the stretch by Aaron McDaniel, Bradley Piper, and Isaak Gonzales would allow ATX to clinch a 43-38 win and the championship of the tournament.  The tournament championship was a great Mother’s Day gift for the boys to provide for each of their mothers who were all in attendance.   The weekend would see Andrew Hagen provided keys minutes off the bench, making some key steals and scoring a few buckets on the offensive end.  Bradley Piper, Aaron McDaniel, and Josh King each had the long-ball working as they combined for 15 made 3’s over the course of the weekend.  Isaak Gonzales really pushed the ball up court offensively, putting constant pressure on the defense.   Tanner Thrift played an exceptional game down on the low blocks, grabbing most every rebound and blocking several shots in the absence of Kofi Asante who did not play in either game on Sunday.  Ryan Lamb would come off the bench and score in double-figures in the game against SA Jr. Select.   Jalen Campbell continued to play tough perimeter defense and creating several turnovers.  All players scored and got into the offensive action during the weekend.  ATX had four different players score in double figures the weekend (King, Lamb, McDaniel, and Byrd).  The team was lead offensively by Byrd who averaged 10.3 points/game followed by Josh King and Aaron McDaniel who both averaged 8 points/game.  After the trophy ceremony the boys had a special ceremony of their own.  Each of them presented their moms with a yellow rose and a special “I Love You” certificate.  Next up for the talented team is a USSSA event in Buda, TX in two weeks.

ATX 2013 experience Kingwood and reach Semi-finals / SILVER Division

Houston, TX — ATX 7th ventured out for the first time to compete in the Houston/Kingwood Classic which is arguably the largest AAU tournament of its kind in the country, featuring over 700 teams who competed during the weekend.  The 13U division alone saw 48 teams participating, featuring some of the best teams and best athletes from all over the country.  ATX competed well when you consider the fact that all three of their losses came at the hands of teams that would survive the weekend and qualify to play in the either the Platinum, Gold, or Silver championship games on Sunday afternoon.  ATX had an unfortunate draw for the weekend with their first pool play game coming against the billionaire-backed organization, the Texas Titans, who was the overall winner in last year’s Kingwood tournament and arguably one of the top 2-3 teams in the country.  The Titans, who would go on to play in Sunday’s PLATINUM championship game, were dominating from the beginning with their superior size and exceptional outside shooting which included nineteen made 3’s.  ATX lost 97-41 to the classy Titan organization.  ATX’s luck didn’t improve much as they were next forced to play their 2nd pool play game against the talented Delaware Hawks later in the day.  ATX hung tough early on, down only by 7 points at half, but they never were able to make a formidable comeback against the Hawks who had the luxury of having to only play one pool game on Saturday.  ATX went on to lose 65-42.   The Hawks would go on to win 3 games straight and competed in the GOLD division championship game on Sunday.  ATX would bounce back and compete well for their first two bracket-play games.  ATX would play and defeat the SA Magic by a score of 41-32 in a game that was the last scheduled game for the evening and would end at 12:25am.   Nothing like playing basketball past midnight!   Jalen Campbell hit two big 3’s in the 2nd half to help ATX make separation from the Magic and clinch a victory.  The extremely late night game would take a toll on the team the following day unfortunately.  ATX would face Cut-The-Nets, a team from the Woodlands, Texas, for their 2nd bracket play game.  It was a back-and-forth battle for most of the game until 4 minutes left in the game.  Josh King and Tanner Thrift would combine to go 6-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch in the last 2 minutes that helped seal the 46-41 victory for ATX.    The victory propelled ATX into the semi-final game of the SILVER bracket that would be played just an hour later.  Unfortunately the team showed the effects of getting minimal sleep the night before and an illness to Kofi Asante would be too much to overcome as ATX would see their Kingwood run cut short with a lopsided loss to the Total Package, 63-35.   Aaron McDaniel would lead the team in scoring against the Titans with 15 points and Josh King would lead the team in scoring with 11, 10, and 12 in the next three games.  Justin Moss led the team offensively with 6 points against the Total Package.  It was a GREAT first showing for the boys, providing a great experience for players, parents, and coaches.

ATX Class of 2013 take Consolation Championship in Combined 7th & 8th grade Division of MAYB/Slamma Jamma III

Austin, TX — ATX 7th competed in the MAYB/Slamma Jamma III tournament this weekend that was held at Johnston High School and hosted by GCTYA and ATX.  This was a combined 7th & 8th grade tournament that included teams from Austin, Killeen, San Antonio, Maurin, and Round Rock.  The tournament featured an 8-team bracket play format that unfortunately saw ATX stumble out of the blocks against the San Antonio Wildcats, the team that ATX had defeated last July in the AT&T center for the MAYB state championship.  SA Wildcats had obviously come to Austin with a mission to seek revenge against ATX.  They played hard and resilient which was evident by their determination and high energy.  ATX got off to a slow start, getting down 16-6 early on but managed to claw their way back to within 2 at halftime.  But costly turnovers and foul trouble down the stretch would cost ATX as they go on to lose 41-33.  ATX would bounce back later in the day as they went on to defeat the Quad-City Kings 35-31 in a tightly contested game.   Kofi Asante and Josh King led the team offensively in Saturday’s games with each scoring 13 points.  ATX would face the Austin Dawgs for the consolation championship on Sunday afternoon.  Jay Byrd and Justin Moss returned to the line-up for the Sunday afternoon game after both had been absent from the Saturday games.  It was a dominate showing by the Class of 2013 as they seized an early lead and never looked back, going on to win 60-37.  It was great display of teamwork and sharing the basketball as the team would score 60 points and see all team members score but no single player would score more than 8 points for the game.  Josh King led the team in scoring for the weekend averaging almost 9 points/game, including going 9-12 from the charity stripe for the tournament.  Next up for the ATX squad is the Houston Kingwood Classic.

ATX 7th Claim Championship at Texas Basketball, Inc / Longhorn Classic

Austin, TX—The ATX 7th grade team participated in the Longhorn Classic this past weekend that was hosted by TX Basketball, Inc.  and played out at Reagan High School.  Participating teams included TX Ambassadors (Bryan), TX Ambassadors (Austin), Austin Wildcats, San Antonio Dawgs, and Westlake Hoops.  ATX played well, going 4-1 and winning the championship with their only loss coming in pool play on a last second shot made by the good shooting Westlake Hoops team, 47-45.  ATX would bounce back later that day with a 48-38 pool-play victory over the TX Ambassadors (Bryan).  Bracket play had ATX defeating the Austin Wildcats (67-48) and later the SA Dawgs (47-37).  The championship game saw a rematch with Westlake Hoops with ATX getting the upper hand this time around (49-36).  This was a great team effort by the entire team with ATX’s deep bench really coming into play during the weekend since ATX was forced to play 3 games on Sunday against opponents who only had to play 2 games.  ATX was without their leading scorer, Aaron McDaniel for the weekend, however, other players stepped up well in his absence.  All players contributed major minutes throughout the weekend with everyone getting into the action offensively.  ATX enjoyed four different high scorers in five games:  Asante (14), Gonzales (12), King (9), and Piper (20) with Bradley ‘B’ Piper coming up big in the championship game with his season high.  Andrew Hagen enjoyed a season high as well during the weekend with 5 points.  Justin Moss was in double-figures with 11 points.  Congrats to the players and parents for a well-played tournament!  Up next for the talented squad is the 11th annual Central Texas Shoot-out on April 12-13th in Austin.  Go ATX!

Class of 2013 take 2nd place in Capital City Easter Bash

Austin, TX—The ATX 7th grade team participated in the Saturday only tournament at LBJ High school which included the following teams:  Hays Rebels, A-tex Wildcats, SA Roadrunners, SA Blackhawks, Austin Dawgs,  SA Rohawks, and Capital City Tigers.  The ATX hosted event was a bracket play format that included some competitive games for all that participated.  ATX initially faced the feisty Hays Rebels in their opening round game.  ATX won 53-45 and then went on to face and defeat the Capital City Tigers 54-38 in semi-final action.  The championship game pitted a rematch with ATX again facing the SA Rohawks, a team ATX had defeated 3 weeks earlier.  ATX started the game well, taking an early lead however they would see their offense sputter and go flat in the 2nd half.  The Rohawks seized on the opportunity and went on to defeat ATX in the championship game.  ATX continues to see everyone get involved in both ends of the court with every team member scoring at least once during the 1-day event.  ATX saw five different players score close to double-figures or more: Jay Byrd (11), Tanner Thrift (10), Josh King(9), Kofi Asante (9), and Aaron McDaniel(14).  Up next for the talented Pflugerville-based team is the Longhorn Classic on March 29-30th, hosted by Texas Basketball, Inc.

ATX Teammates Josh King and Aaron McDaniel lead PYBA to Consolation Championship in Jr. NBA Championships

San Antonio, TX—The Pflugerville Youth Basketball Association (PYBA), the largest recreational basketball league in Pflugerville, took their top 10 league players 13-and-under to compete in the Jr NBA championship tournament that took place at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.  ATX teammates Josh King and Aaron McDaniel help lead their team to a strong tournament showing, going 2-1 and winning the consolation bracket with their only loss coming at the hands of the ultimate tournament winner, San Antonio Parks and Recreation #2.  Both Aaron and Josh were deadly from the perimeter with their 3-point shooting, making close to ten 3’s between the two of them during the weekend.  Josh led the team in scoring with 10 pts/game for the weekend.  Congrats Aaron and Josh!

Class of 2013 have Strong Showing in Capital City Round Robin, go 5-1 and take 2nd place in 7th Grade Division

Austin, TX—The ATX 7th grade team participated in the Capital City Round Robin, their first real tournament of the new Spring/Summer season that was held at Crockett High School.  Playing half the tournament without Andrew Hagen and the entire weekend without injured starter Kofi Asante, the team saw other team members “step up” and compete well through out most of the entire tournament.  Early victories came at the expense of the Capital City Tigers (50-32), SA Mustangs (55-48), and the RR Dream Team (97-29) which featured a career team high of seventeen made 3’s – seemed like everything they shot hit nothing but the net!   Additional victories were had over Rapage (55-42) and the San Antonio Rohawks (55-51) with the only loss for the weekend coming at the hands of the talented Mansfield Select team who also went 5-1 for the weekend.  The weekend was full of some challenging games with ATX having to come from behind in 3 of their 5 wins.  The entire roster got into the scoring action over the weekend which saw six different players score in double figures -- Byrd(17, 15, 10), Gonzales(11,10), Lamb (10), Moss(10,10), McDaniel (27,10), and King (22,12) with Jay Byrd averaging 10 points/game for the entire weekend.   ATX continues to enjoy a balanced offensive attack which included five different players leading the team in individual game scoring – Byrd, McDaniel, Gonzales, Moss, and King.  New comer Tanner Thrift continues to be a strong, aggressive rebounder on the interior and shows great promise as he continues to learn the system and become acclimated to his new teammates.   Jalen Campbell continues to be one of the team’s better perimeter defenders.  Bradley “B” Piper and Ryan “Ryno” Lamb enjoyed a strong offensive showing, scoring 28 and 30 points respectively during the weekend.  The team will take off a few weeks to enjoy Spring Break and Easter weekend and will resume playing the last weekend in March.  Way to go ATX!

ATX Players help lead teams to co-district Championship in Pflugerville

Pflugerville, TXSeveral members of the 7th grade ATX squad help propel their individual school ‘A’ teams to the 2008 district championship for 7th grade.  Jay Byrd and Justin Moss, both starters for Pflugerville Middle School, helped lead their team in a late season charge to revenge a pre-season loss to Kelly Lane and ATX teammates Kofi Asante, Isaak Gonzales, Ryan Lamb, and Josh King.  Kelly Lane, Pflugerville, and Westview each went 5-1 in district play and all will enjoy a share in the district title for the year.  Justin and Jay, however, get braggin’ rights for the summer in that the end-of-season tournament saw Pflugerville Middle School go undefeated and secure the 1st place trophy.  It was the “J & J” show as the ATX ballers defeated their Kelly Lane teammates for a 2nd straight time in semi-final action in what turned out to be a true “dog fight”.  PMS went on to again face Westview who they easily defeated by 12 in the championship game.  It was great to see the ATX teammates square-off and compete intently and then shake hands afterward. All is a buzz about the success of the various ATX players this past season.   The boys are anxiously awaiting to return to the hardwood with their fellow teammates as practices officially start up in three weeks.

Austin, TXThe class of 2013 took the opportunity to see a little “pre-season” action by participating in the ATX hosted MAYB/Slamma Jamma II tournament that took place Sunday, January 20th at Lanier High School.  Despite having only minimal practice, the award-winning team from last year returned to their winning ways, going 3-0 and claiming the championship of the GOLD 6th/7th grade division.  This tournament was comprised of teams from Houston/Woodlands, Seguin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Lake Travis.  ATX defeated both the Round Rock Cougars and Texas Hustlers in pool play and then concluded the tournament with a win over the Woodlands Bulls in the championship game.  ATX enjoyed offensive contributions from all players through out the day, with 10 out of 11 players scoring in game one and 11 out of 11 players scoring in game two.  Three different players lead the team in scoring in each of three different games (Justin Moss (7), Josh King (10), and Isaak Gonzales (14)).   The boys now will return to their middle school teams to finish up the seasons, returning to ATX play in late February.  A big “THANKS” to all the parents and siblings that helped host this event!

Off in PISD Season Openers – ATX Players Major Factors

Pflugerville, TXPISD had season opening games tonight which featured many current 7th grade ATX players.  The marquee match-up that evening in district play pitted the Kelly Lane MS Knights ‘A’ team vs. the Pflugerville Middle School Panthers ‘A’ team.  The starting teams took the court with 5 of the 10 starters being ATX players:  PMS:  Jacob Sowell and Justin Moss; KLMS:  Kofi Asante, Isaak Gonzales, and Ryan Lamb (in for an injured ATX teammate Josh King).  It was a tight, closely fought first half with KLMS leading 15-10 at halftime.  Both teams had showed season-opening jitters.  The Kelly Lane Knights, however, went on a 12-2 run to start the 2nd half and maintained that lead for the remainder of the game, winning 60-48.   Justin Moss led PMS in scoring with 12 points and Kofi Asante led KLMS with approximately 18 points.    It was a great time that saw all the ATX parents cheering on all of the kids on both teams.  This should be an even more exciting game as both ATX players Jay Byrd and Josh King will be expected to be in the lineup when the rematch occurs next year.   Also that evening saw ATX player Jalen Campbell start and help lead Dessau MS over Parkcrest MS 45-30.  Good job Jalen!

ATX Organization -Wide Picnic at Decker Lake was Great!

Austin, TXMany of the team members enjoyed a great time out at Decker Lake on Saturday at the organization wide picnic.  The food was all great, including Coach Oscar’s great BBQ Brisket.  It was great to see our 6th grade kids get a chance to play with both the younger and older players in the organization.  Fun was also had on the lake as several folks enjoyed a boat ride and getting a chance to be pulled on the tube behind the boat.  Thanks to Roderick Burns, the GCTYA president, for organizing and planning everything.
