Martin John ca.1765 d.1847
Much of the information on the JOHN family comes from the
book, "Armstrong County Pennsylvania, Her People Past and Present", Vol. I and
II published in 1914. Other information came from 'The Bowser Family History' by Addison
Bartholomew Bowser, A. M. published in 1922. Bold equals my line.
Rev. Martin John b.ca 1765 d.1847 married Mary Esther Bowser (Bausser) (in
her native tongue it would be Matilena Bausser) born in 1758/68 in Paradise Twp., York
Co., PA. d.xxxx. Martin was a Dunkard minister who came to Washington Twp., Armstrong Co.,
PA and settled on what is now (1922) known as the Jonas Bowser farm. Martin hewed the logs
for and built a log cabin in Washington township which was the first building in that
section of the county in 1808. A second story was added and the house sheltered 4
generations. The house fell into ruin in 1918. Esther was the daughter of Mathias Bausser,
Jr. 1711- and his wife Anna Elizabeth Unknown b.1713, and the granddaughter of Mathias Bausser, Sr. ca.1670-xxxx and his wife Esther
Unknown.. (NOTE:Apparently some of the JOHN family changed names to JOHNS, also, the same
person may be either JOHN or JOHNS in different sources.) They had 7 children:
- John John ca.1785 d.3-1-1866 married Elizabeth Crisman. They had 10
children:

- Adam C. John b.xxxx d.1-20-1892 m. Esther Crisman b.xxxx d.11-1893.
- Esther John m. (1) Elijah Flenner (2) Johnathan Bowser.
- John John, Jr. m. Ann Toy.
- Philip (Phillip) John m. Mary Lasher.
- Isaac John m. Catharine Lasher.
- Martin John 1797-1856 m. Mary Crisman 1799-1871.
- Samuel John m. Sarah Lasher.
- Henry John m. (1) Sarah A. Hooks (2) Caroline Hooks.
- Peter John b.ca 1790 d.xxxx married Catherine (Catharine)
Helsel (Heltzel) b.1795 d.c1892. Peter was born in Huntingdon Co., PA. They had at
least one child:(My GGGGP)
- Martin John b.1822 d.4-28-1900 married Mary Whittaker (Whiticker)b.4-21-1823
d.10-13-1885. Martin and Mary lived on a farm not far from Plumville, Indiana County, PA.
Martin and Mary had 5 children:
- Catherine John b.3-3/5-1843 d.4-29-1916 married on 12-29-1864 William J. Hays b.10-7-1838 d.2-8-1908. Mr. Hays was born in
Northern Ireland and came to America at the age of 16. His parents are William J. Hays and
Letitia Morrow. Catherine moved to Armstrong Co. when William died.
- Tobias John(s) m. Mary McGarvey.
- John W. John(s) m. Ann McGarvey.
- David John another source shows him to be Daniel John, who died in the Civil War.
- Mary John another source shows her to be Elizabeth John who m. Thomas McGlaughlin.
- Elizabeth John b.xxxx d.1858 m. Henry Helsel b.xxxx d.1866. Henry was of Bedford Co., PA
and was the brother of Catharine Helsel who married Peter John. They settled
near her father in Washington Twp. now (1922) known as Roudabush farm. They had one child:
- Esther Helsel b.2-12-1819 d.6-5-1851 m. Bartholomew Booher b.5-1-1818 d.1-4-1905. Esther
and Bartholomew had 7 children:
- Emanuel Booher b.4-3-1840 k. battle of Fair Oaks, Civil War. Emanuel m. Mary Fair.
- Elizabeth Booher b.9-6-1841 m. (1)M. S. Bowser and (2) Martin Bowser.
- Isabelle Booher b.2-3-1844 d.2-8-1914 m. Abner Bonner b.10-9-1838 d.5-9-1915. Abner was
a storekeeper in Adrian, PA.
- Henry Booher b.7-27-1846 d.ca.1917 in Arizona. Henry m. Mary Ann Southworth. Henry was a
prospector and miner.
- Mary Booher b.1-1-1849 d.xxxx m. Jacob Frick b.4-6-1843. They had 4 children.
- Clemence Booher b.1858 d.xxxx never married, lived in Saratoga, TX.
- Clara Booher b.3-9-1861 d.xxxx m. Austin Leard b.8-27-1854. They had 7 children.
- Esther John m. Simon Steelsmith.
- Catherine John m. John Crisman.
- Christina John m Peter Helsel.
- Martin John (Known as 'Red Martin') 1797-d.bef.9-30-1856 born in Bedford
Co., PA (another source has Huntingdon Co., PA) and moved to Washington TWP, Armstrong
Co., PA and was a farmer. (One source describes this location as 'a portion of his
father's tract of land two miles north of Montgomeryville, PA') Martin married in 1822
Mary (Christman) Chrisman 1799-9/1871. They had 8 children:
- Jacob John died when almost 2 years old.
- Christina John 1832-1850, aged 18.
- Esther John m. David Hawk.
- Ann (Anna) John b.1830 m. Jacob Crisman and 2nd Thomas Craig.
- Michel (Michael) John 1833- m. Nancy McCollum. They had one child, Harriet John b.1858.
- Elizabeth John b.10-6-1834 d.1923 married first on 2-25-1858 Christian
Yerty Wyant b.10-19-1834 d.3-24-1910. Mr. Wyant was the son of Adam Wyant and Sarah Yerty
and grandson of Martin Wyant and his wife Christina Bokher. They lived in Washington
Township. Elizabeth married 2nd in 1878, Robert A. Bowser but no issue. Elizabeth and
Christian had 8 children:(One died as an infant, unnamed.)
- Mary Ann Wyant 3-20-1860 married C. Phillip moved to Butler Co., PA.
- Rosa Elvira Wyant 4-1-1862 married Cash Cramer resident of Oil City, PA.
- Sarah Margaret Wyant b.9-4-1864 d.6-4-1865.
- Andrew Robert Elmer Wyant b.5-20-1867 minister and physician in Chicago.
- Adam Martin Wyant b.9-15-1869 and attorney in Greensburg, PA.
- William Whitfield Wyant b.5-20-1873 a physician in Farrel, PA.
- Florence Bell Wyant b.7-15-1876 married John Matta. Florence was a physician in Sharon,
PA.
- Catherine John b.10-6-1837 d.xxxx m. John Donnell.
- Christman John (Rev. Christian John) b.4-6-1842- married in 1862 Jane Mitchell (Michel).
Christman was born in Wash. TWP, Armstrong Co. and they were married in Westmoreland Co.,
PA, and they had 6 children:(NOTE:Another source spells CHRISTMAN AS CRISTMAN OR
CHRISTIAN)
