William Hays 1838 - 1908

William Hays b. 1-7-1838 d. 2-8-1908, son of Wm. J. Hays Jr. and Letitia Morrow, married on 12/29/1864 in Rimersburg, PA Catherine Ann John b. 3-3-1843 d.4-29-1916, daughter of Martin John III and Mary Whitaker, granddaughter of Peter John and great granddaughter of Martin John.

William came to this country from Ireland with his parents and his fathers two brothers, Robert Hay(es) and Fred Hay(s) in about 1854. The family located on a farm in Madison Twp., Armstrong County, PA., where his father followed agricultural pursuits and ran a distillery. Soon after William married Catherine, he settled in Washington Twp. on a tract of 120 acres, which he cultivated and also ran a saw mill. He was a veteran in the Civil War, serving 3 years as a member of Company E in the 62 Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry from Clarion Co. There is an account of his war experiences written by Carolyn Raham, including some letters on The Western Pennsylvania Civil War Resources Page. He was wounded slightly in the battle of Gettysburg. William was my ggrandfather and as indicated he fought on the side of the North while my grandfather fought for the South. William was elected to various supervising offices of the school district and was County Auditor. William and Catherine had sixteen (16) children.

• Malvern Hays Marshall b.6/29/1903 d.3/1/1980 m. Catherine Gates b.12/15/1910 d.11/25/1982. They had 2 children:
• Glenda Kay Marshall b.4/26/1937 m. James E. Roop.
• Patricia C. Marshall b.8/19/1938 m. Alexander Soulakis.
5. Catherine (Katie)Ann Hays b. 4-21-1869 d.12/6/1939 m. Austin Stouffer b.1/25/1858 d.12/23/1930. Katie and Austin had 3 children: The Catherine page is under construction.
