Col. John Preston b. 7-8-1781 d. 10-10-1864, son of Robert Preston Sr. and his wife Margaret Rhea, married Oct. 5, 1802 Margaret Brown Preston b. 2-23-1784 d. 5-4-1843. Margaret was the twelfth child of Col. William Preston and his wife Susanna Smith, of the Smithfield Prestons. Margaret was born at Smithfield seven months after her father's death. John Preston was a Captain in the War of 1812, a Colonel of the 105th Virginia Militia and presiding Justice of Washington Co., Va. from 1820-1852. The couple had 14 children.   1. Susan Smith Preston b. 7-17-1803 d. 11-2-1828 m. Joseph Campbell Rhea on 1/21/1824. They had 3 children.

  2. Dr. Robert Fairman Preston b. 12-5-1804 d. 7-7-1889 m. Miss Sarah Marshall b.2-20-1799 d.12-10-1866. Robert was born and died in Washington Co., VA. Sarah was born in Philadelphia, PA and they were married in Philadelphia on 12-5-1827. Sarah was the daughter of Charles Marshall and Mary Wallace. They are buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Robert and Sarah had 3 daughters:
    1. Mary Marshall Preston b.9-21-1828 d.7-5-1900 m. on 6-11-1867 Edmond Winston.
    2. Margaret Preston died at 3 years.
    3. Elizabeth Preston b.1-4-1833 d.5-5-1897 m. on 9-5-1855 Dr. Ezra Sheffey. Elizabeth and Ezra had 4 children:
      • Robert Fairman Sheffey b.6-24-1856 d.7-8-1935 m. in 1879 Mary Carmack and they had 3 children.
        • Robert Preston Sheffey b.xxxx d.xxxx lived in the original Preston home "Walnut Grove".
        • Margaret Sheffey m. R. D. Minnick.

      • Charles Marshall Sheffey m. Carrie Winston.
      • Sara Anna Preston Sheffey m. Mr. Riddle.
      • Henry Sheffey 1859-1939 m. Faith Fulkerson 1859-1938.
  3. Margaret Rhea Preston b. 8-26-1806 d. 3-26-1860 m. on 12-27-1825 James Lowery White b.12-21-1804 d. 12-8-1838. They were married in Walnut Grove. Margaret was born in Washington Co. and died inAbingdon. She is buried in White Family Cem. in Washington Co. James was the son of Col. James White and Eliza Wilson. They had 8 children.
  4. William Alfred Preston b. 5-21-1808 d. 5-26-1862 m.(first) Martha E. Wiley on 9-15-1828, and (second) Elizabeth Radford b.6-26-1832 d.2-8-1898 married in Botetourt Co., VA on 3-30-1857. Elizabeth was born in Bedford Co. VA and was the daughter of William Radford and Susanna Smith Preston. They had one child.
  5. John Preston Jr. b.2-10-1811 d.5--1882 m. Mary Howard Wickliffe b.xxxx d.11-17-1892 of Lexington, KY on 1-15-1852. Mary was born in Lexington and was the daughter of Robert Wickliffe and Margaret Preston Howard. They had one child who died in infancy.
  6. Eleanor Fairman Preston b. 11-7-1812 d. 1-10-1887 m. Judge James White Sheffey of Marion, Va. on 9-29-1835. Eleanor was born in Washington Co. and died in Marion, Smythe Co., VA. Judge Sheffey was born 3-15-1813 died 6-27-1876. He was the son of Henry L. Sheffey and Margaret White. He died in Richmond, VA. They had 11 children.
  7. Elizabeth Madison Preston b. 8-26-1814 d. 4-5-1865. She died unmarried. She gave the land for the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church to be built on. (Bristol, Va.)
  8. Thomas White Preston b. 8-13-1816 d. 4--1862 m. (first) a relative, Mary Craighead b. 1827 d.5-13-1849, of Nashville, TN, and (2nd) Susan Maguire b.7-12-1829 d.8-7-1906. Susan was born and died in Columbia, TN. Thomas was killed at the battle of Shiloh in 1862. Mary was born in Nashville and was the daughter of David Craighead and Mary Hunt Macon. Mary died in Mississippi Co., Arkansas. By his first wife Mary he had one child:
    • David C. Preston.

    By his second wife, Thomas had 2 children who died in infancy.

  9. Walter Eugene Preston b. 1-28-1818 d. 4-23-1866 m. Fannie Hayes b. ca.1818 d.1891 of Jackson, Tenn. Fannie was the daughter of Samuel Jackson Hayes and Frances Middleton.
  10. Jane Preston b. 6-25-1820 m. James B. Craighead of Alabama on 12-27-1846. They had 6 children.

  11. Frank (or Francis ?) Preston b. 3-26-1822 d. 1-13-1892 m. (1st) Virginia Moffett b.1820 d.6-23-1859. Virginia was born in Waverly, Loudoun Co., VA and died in Wash. Co. She is buried in Walnut Grove Cem. and they had 4 sons.

    5. Frank married secondly Miss Mattie Fulton b. ca 1846 d.7-4-1927. Mattie was the daughter of Creed Fulton and Mary Taylor. (After Frank's death, Mattie married Henry Stuart Crockett on 7-1-1906.) Mattie and Frank had twins.

    6. Charles Taylor Preston, died in infancy
    7. Mary Fulton Preston, died young.
  12. James Tecumseh Preston b. 4-1-1824 d. 12-9-1883 m. Fannie Rhea of Blountville, Tenn. in 1850. Fannie was born 1-22-1826 and died in 1888. They had 6 children.
  13. Joseph Preston b. 5-1-1826 d. 5-11-1847 died unmarried.
  14. Henry Preston b. 11-20-1828 d. 7-17-1899 m. Anne Cary Carter b.4-19-1833 d.1-12-1895 on 9-8-1852. Both Henry and Anne are buried at Walnut Grove Cem., Wash. Co., VA. They had 10 children.
