- I have printed out any email relating to genealogy for the past 5 years, however,
recently I have been trying to answer some of these and obviously the email address has
changed. If you have sent me email, you have something posted on the Bulletin Board, or
you entered something in my Guest Book, and your email address has changed, please send me
the correct address. My email is in the entry just below this. Fred Preston
- Looking for a Carolyn Raham of Keystone Hts, FL. Need her email address to check on some
genealogy. Found Carolyn Raham, historian of the Hays clan of
Pennsylvania.
- Email from Scott E. Preston. Has received help
from a previous posting but still needs help as follows:
Jonathan Preston was born in 1808 in Suffolk County, Mass. Jonathan married Emily Webb b.
1819, the youngest daughter and only child of Thomas Smith Webb to have children. (TSW is
credited as being the founder of the York Rite and Templar Free Masonry in the U.S.)
Jonathan was apparently a quite renowned architect according to both the Boston and
Massachusetts Historical Societies. Jonathan and Emily had at least two sons, William G.
Preston and Thomas Webb Preston ( My G Grandfather). William was apparently both a well
known Painter and Architect. Two years ago I was contacted by a Thomas Hastings Rindge who
found my msg. on your site. Apparently Rindge's grandfather (Fredrick Hastings Rindge,
also from a prominent Boston Family) was best friends with Thomas Webb Preston and after
the two graduated from Harvard together in 1879, they took a trip throughout the southwest
US by horse and by stagecoach. Thomas Rindge supplied me with a transcribed copy of a
diary of the trip. Interestingly enough, Rindge's grandfather was introduced to his
grandmother by a Hartwell L Preston. Hartwell was married to a woman by the name of Emily
and they lived in N. California. Apparently, Hartwell is somehow related to Thomas Webb
Preston. ( I am looking for the family link to Hartwell, it appears he was a cousin to
Thomas) Emily sometime around the turn of the century was highly regarded among other
things as a "healer" of some note. Hartwell and Emily founded some sort of
commune and eventually the town of Preston, CA. The town ceased to exist some time around
1943. There is located in this area today a winery, Preston Vineyards. Quite a number of
buildings on the original property of Emily and Hartwell are still standing. I spoke to a
woman who did her thesis at Sonoma State University on the town of Preston, the commune,
and Emily Preston in particular There is apparently a current movement to restore the name
of the town to Preston and to name the original homestead and commune property as a
national historical site. William Preston was married to a woman named Estelle, I know
they had at least one son, Evans Preston b. 1868. Thomas Webb Preston married Arlene
(nicknames:Ada/Addie) Fiero in Sept. 1885 in Grand County, Colorado. In 1886, my
grandfather Harry Fiero Preston was born and in aprx. 1888 his sister Margaret Webb
Preston. Sometime prior to 1920, Thomas and Arlene divorced and Thomas married Effie
MacFarland Preston. Thomas and Effie had a son by the name of Shirley, they resided in the
Los Angeles area. Harry married Florence Victoria Perry, they lived in the Chicago area.
Margaret married Eggert Peters and they lived in the San Francisco area At this point, I
am looking for info on William G. Preston, his son Evans Preston and any descendents,
Hartwell L. Preston and the family link to Thomas or Jonathan. I am also looking for any
info on the parents of Jonathan Preston. Posted 1/2/2004.

- Hello --Thanks for your Preston webpages. I'm wondering if you have any information
about the following Preston -- I quote: William Bowlin 14 April 1668 purchased 807 acres
in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, near Col. Augustine Warner. His land began at a
small creek dividing his and the land of Col. Warner, to Edward Wills, to Kerbye's w.o. to
swamp dividing this and land of Mr. Law, Smith &c. 750 acres granted to Mr. David Fox
in 1648 and assigned to sd. Bowlin; & 137 acs for trans of 3 pers: Jno. Cheney, Peter
Hicks, Wm. Preston. [Source: Cavaliers and Pioneers, Patent Book No. 6, pg. 36, Vol. 2,
1666-1695] I cannot find any further information on William Preston or Peter Hicks. John
Cheney remained in Rappahannock Co. [extinct] near John Tabott. In your data is there a
possibility that this Willam Preston is connected to yours of Pennsylvania? Thanks,

- Just ran across this one from one year ago but better late than never!
I am seeking
information on the family of John PRESTON of Fincastle, VA who was the father of Nancy
PRESTON Thomison McDonald.
Nancy PRESTON married [1] John THOMISON, Jr. on Nov. 23, 1809 in Botetourt Co., VA,
Children of Nancy PRESTON and John THOMISON, Jr.
1. Lucinda W. Thomison
2. William Preston Thomison b. 1812 married [2] Bryan/Bryant A. McDONALD 1781-1841 on
April 26, 1815 in Botetourt Co., VA.
Byran/Bryant A. McDonald is the son of William McDonald 1756-1833 and Nancy Ann Robinson
c1756-1852, both of Botetourt Co., VA
Nancy PRESTON and Bryan/Bryant A. McDONALD are my line.
Children of Nancy Preston and Bryan/Bryant McDONALD:
1. Rebecca MCDONALD b. 1816
2. Mary MCDONALD b. 1820 - 1825
3. James MCDONALD b. 1822 - 1832
4. Martha MCDONALD b. 1829
5. Joseph MCDONALD b. 1830
6. Bryan MCDONALD b. 1833
7. John MCDONALD b. 1835
8. Lewis MCDONALD b. 1836 - 1841
Nancy and Bryan/Bryant McDONALD moved to Rhea Co., TN "sometime" after the 1830
Census in Botetourt Co., VA was taken.
1830 Census Botetourt Co., VA p. 367 Bryant McDonald 1000102 - 2001
Bryan/Bryant is listed on the 1840 Census in Rhea Co., TN. 1840 Census Rhea Co., TN Bryant
McDonald 1211 0001 - 001
My sources so far are:

Publishing, Dayton, TN), p. 163.
"John Thomison, progenitor of the Rhea County Thomisons, made his home in Bedford
County, Virginia. His son, John, Jr., lived at Fincastle, Virginia, having married Nancy

"McDonald, Byran & Nancy Thomason 26 Apr 1815; widow of John, b-John Preston;

I suspect that Nancy Preston Thomison McDonald died before 1841 since she is not mentioned
in the quote below:

Settlements & Guardian Reports 1810-1881," The Rhea County Historical &

Bryan McDonald; bond with William McDonald, Isaac Benson, and James M. Hail, his
securities, for $4000. Letter of Administration to Bryan R. McDonald."
[Note: Bryan R. McDonald is the first cousin of Bryan/Bryant A. McDonald.
William McDonald is probably Bryan/Bryant's first cousin, bro of Bryan R.
Isaac Benson is Bryan/Bryant's son-in-law married to dau. Rebecca.
James M. Hail (or Hale) is Bryan/Bryant's son-in-law, married to dau. Mary
James M. Hail/Hale and Mary McDonald are my line.]
William Preston Thomison (son of Nancy Preston and John Thomison, Jr. ... ie .step-son of
Bryan/Bryant) was named guardian of Joseph, Bryan and John McDonald and minors Martha and
Lewis McDonald. 2 Nov 1846 Wm McDonald (probably Bryan A. McDonald's 1st cousin and
brother of Bryan R. McDonald) becomes guardian of Martha and Lewis McDonald.
History of Rhea Co., TN, Biography of William Preston THOMISON (son of Nancy Preston and
John Thomison, Jr.), states that William Ballard PRESTON was his cousin.
There is no Nancy Preston listed as a daughter of John Preston 1764-1827, son of William
Preston and Susanna Smith, at http://members.fortunecity.com/fpreston/sfjohnpr.htm
There is no Nancy Preston listed as a daughter of Col. John Preston 1781 - 1864, son of
Robert Preston Sr. and Margaret Rhea, at
http://members.fortunecity.com/fpreston/coljohnp.htm.
I would appreciate any help or comments you have.

- For a number of years I have been trying to locate a MOSES PRESTON, born between
1795-1800, perhaps in Pennsylvania or Cecil County, MD. Some thought has him coming from
the settlement in Preston, Talbot County, MD. No information found! He died in Harford
County in 1852. He was married to BLANCHE L. MONOHON in 1819 in Harford County. Her father
was ARTHUR MONOHON, SR. Moses is believed to have been a Quaker, hence forth coming out of
Philadelphia at some point after the Revolutionary War. He is not believed to be of the
Prestons from Baltimore and south in the mid-1700s. A WILLIAM MOOBERRY, JR. out of
Pennsylvania and Cecil County is part of the linkage.

- I am trying to find any info on the man I believe to be my paternal grandfather, Ronald
Douglas Dearing, the son of George W. Dearing and Ora Anna Preston. My grandmother, Cora
Elizabeth Crockett had records that indicate that she married a Ronald Douglas Dearing in
January 0f 1917. My father, Sydney Clyde Dearing was born December 31, 1918 and for
whatever reason Ronald apparantly left Cora either shortly before or shortly after my
father was born so my father never knew his father. My father told me that he remembers
that at a very early age he traveled with his mother to Bluefied, WV where Ronald was
supposed to be living at the time to try to find him but they apparantly had no luck in
that regard. Dad also said that he believes that he was named after an uncle. Ronald had a
brother Thomas Sidney Dearing. Even though the spelling Sydney/Sidney is different this
would lend some credence to that. I came across the attached old picture in my father's
papers after he died last year. I think it is a picture of Cora and Ronald. While doing some web surfing I came across your
Preston Genealogy website and found that you show the same info I have on the Isaac
Preston line. Isaac was the grandfather of Ora Anna Preston. Ora Anna and George Dearing
had five children but that's as far as I can go with the info that I have a present. I
believe that Ora Anna ("Annie") and George were either divorced sometime between
1900 and 1910 or he died during that same period. He was listed on the Bluefield, Mercer
County, West Virginia census rolls for the year 1900 as the head of the house along with
his wife "Annie P." and five children, Ethel, Curry, Lucille, Ronald and Thomas.
But on the census of 1910 Annie was listed as the head of the house along with her five
children plus eleven non-relative boarders. Since divorce was rather uncommon at the start
of the 20th century and since he was not listed on any Virginia or West Virginia census
rolls for 1910, I make the assumption that George more probably died forcing Annie to take
in boarders to feed her rather large family. I would greatly appreciate any further info
you might have on the five Dearing children of George Dearing and Ora Anna Preston in
general or Ronald in particular. Many thanks in advance for any help or any leads which
you may be able to supply. Syd Dearing, Jr. syd@infi.net

- Hi,
I'm not a Preston, but I feel a little like one at this point. I live at Prestonville,
the family home of three generations of Pennsylvania Prestons starting with Joseph Preston
(1748-1810) listed on your web page at
http://members.fortunecity.com/fpreston/maryldp2.htm.
The place name "Prestonville" has passed into history, but the home is still
here, located in London Grove Township near the town of West Grove, PA. The last Preston
owner was Howard Preston (1830-1898), who sold the farm (a dairy farm and regional
creamery) in the 1880's to S. Morris Jones, who continued to operate the creamery, and was
one of the founders of the nursery that eventually became the Conard-Pyle company. (
http://www.conard-pyle.com/ ). I've heard that Howard Preston moved to Elkton, MD, or
Oxford, PA, but don't know for sure.
While much of the farmland became part of Conard-Pyle, the house and creamery were
eventually sold to a Philadephia dairy company, who operated it for a number of years
until it burned in about 1915. Most of the outbuilding were destroyed in the fire, and are
only ruins now (the creamery & a silo), but Conard-Pyle bought the property and built
a carriage house / barn on one of the old foundations, and rebuilt the house in the style
of the period. All of the interior wood was lost in the fire, but the solid brick exterior
remained, and a new interior was constructed. The house was provided to the head
nurseryman from Conard-Pyle, Antoine Wintzer, as his residence, and upon his death in the
1930s, to his successor, Sydney Hutton, of New Jersey. In the 1950's, upon the death of
Robert Pyle, Sydney Hutton purchased Conard-Pyle, and three generations of Huttons have
owned and operated it ever since, and lived in this house until 1997, when I purchased it.
The most famous resident of this house was Ann Preston, (
http://www2.gol.com/users/quakers/ann_preston.htm )also 9.2 on
http://members.fortunecity.com/fpreston/maryldp2.htm , Howard's sister, and one of the
first woman doctors in Pennsylvania, a graduate of the first class of the Women's Medical
College of Pennsylvania, a faculty member there and practioner there, its first woman dean
(in fact, the first woman dean of a medical college in the US), the founder of the Women's
Hospital of Philadelphia, and probably the single most important person in the advancement
of women into the medical profession. Ann was a Hicksite Quaker, aboltionist, poet, and
writer ("Cousin Ann's Stories for Children"). This house is locally recognized
as a station on the Underground Railroad, and there is a stroy oft-told around here of a
particular incident where Ann smuggled a slave past her owner dressed as her mother.
My main purpose in writing this letter is that we are interested in restoring the house
to its condition before the fire, but it has been difficult figuring out exactly what its
original form was.
So, if you could post this letter on your Bulletin Board, perhaps I can connect up with
Preston family members who might might have old photos of the house, or other information
about its original appearance, and who might like to get in touch with their ancestral
home.
Hopefully,
Steve Ford

- My name is Patrick Payne and I have
been researching the Payne family of Virginia. I noted on your web page that you include a
marriage between Elizabeth Howard, daughter of John Howard and Mary Preston, to Edward
Payne, of Fayette Co., Ky., citing among their children Edward G. and Daniel McCarty
Payne.
This information conflicts with data provided by the research of Col. Brooke Payne in his
"Paynes of Virginia" published in 1935 as follows in the entry for Edward Payne
b. 18 Nov. 1726 in Westmoreland County [p. 235-238]. Edward "m. Anne Holland Conyers
27 Feb. 1749/50 in Overwharton Parish, Stafford County; d. 17 May 1806 in Fayette County,
Ky; he and his wife were buried in the family grave-yard on the farm in Fayette County on
which they died. Reference to this burial is found in the will of their son James. About
1733 Edward Payne accompanied his parents (William Payne and Alicia Jones) from
Westmoreland County to Prince William County and lived in a section, a few miles South of
what is now Fairfax Court House, which in 1742 became a part of Fairfax County. In 1754 he
bought 501 acres in Fairfax County on upper side of Pope's Head Creek and adjacent to the
land inherited by his wife from her father.
The Genealogist of the Society of Colonial Dames in Virginia accepted Edward's military
service for qualification for admission to the organization of any of Edward's
descendants.
1758 Edward and his wife granted to Henry Fitzhugh 333 acres in Stafford County that had
been devised to her in her father's will.
In 1768, Colonel George Washington's diary mentions having gone from Alexandria to a
Vestry meeting at Payne's Church, and having lodged thereafter at Captain Edward Payne's.
Anne Holland Conyers was the daughter of Henry Conyers, whose will in Stafford County
dated 1 April 1733 (13 June 1733) names wife Jannette, by whom he had Anne Holland and
Theodosia- to both of whom he left land on Accokeek (Accotink) Creek patented to him in
1706 and purchased in 1715- and also a daughter Sarah. His will also names a daughter
Hester Mauzy by a former marriage. Theodosia m. James Deneale of Stafford County. Anne
Holland Conyers was b. 23 Aug. 1728 in Stafford County. The Register of the Kentucky
Historical Society gives her death on 11 Jan. 1806.
There are several pages dedicated to Edward in "The Paynes of Virginia." The son
Edward G. that you mention is recorded in the book as Edward Conyers Payne rather than
Edward G. A brother, Henry (1753-1828) had children by Anne Lane and perpetuated the name
Conyers in their descendants.
I thought I would bring this to your attention to see if you can confirm the (or a)
marriage with Elizabeth Howard. A tie to the Preston family would be an interesting one as
I have early records indicating Payne involvment with a merchant of London by that
surname.
Regards, Patrick Payne. Anyone have any information on this ??? Posted 7/20/2002.

Be careful and don't assume that information found at the Mormon Web Site, or from CD's
available at Mormon Churches is accurate. I have found mistakes in my own line. Anyone can
enter data into the Mormon database, much like they can on my web pages. A mistake was
found in my data once several years ago. Ha !
- Pat Preston Guglielmi sends the following email.
I am looking for the parents or siblings of my gg grandfather Azom Preston. Census records
show that he was born in 1802 in Vermont. Searching census records I was able to find him
relocated in Wayne County, Pennsylvania in the 1830 census. He married Martha Wilson
Glezen and their first three children were born in that county. Elizabeth born 1827,
Adeline A. 1829, and George S. born in 1831. The family then relocated to Pike County,
Indiana where they remained until their death. Azom died February 2, 1879. Azom and Martha
went onto have 7 additional children born in Pike County, Indiana. Azom Preston has become
my brick wall that I just can't seem to penetrate.
Thanks for your assistance.

- Rien Van Den Brand sent me the following
email, verbatum. Any help appreciated.
Dear Family,
At the moment I am writing a historical work about the (present Dutch) castle and
fortification Het Genneperhuis (ruines now), where your ancestor Thomas Preston was
Spanisch governor from 1636 till summer 1641. He had to surrender himself to the Dutch
prince Frederik Hendrik in July 1641. For illustration purposes I am so far in vain
looking for a portrait of this important commander Thomas Preston. As far I know there
were ones two portraits of him at Gormanston Castle! Can you help me with a photo of with
an other illustration about him. The book (circa 550 pages) will be published mid 2002.
Please be so kind and help me!!!
We may have also most probably complete new information about him for you. With kind
regards and "vriendelijke groeten",

Preston and Elizabeth Dee Preston born Sept. 1914 or 1915. Siblings were Porter or
Portiaux and Sarah or Sally. Any help appreciated. Posted 10/27/01.

1860, possibly in Smith Co., TX. (As of the 1860 census she was living there as Elizabeth
Prewit (Prewitt)) She married first an unknown STOKES (apparently no children), then
married on Apr. 13, 1802 Col. Amos Johnston born ca. 1772 in Dobbs (now Lenoir) Co. NC and
died in Maury Co., TN in 1829. They had 6 children all born in TN. Elizabeth Preston's 3rd

- Chris Sumner is researching his wife's
family and trying to obtain information on Charles Walter Preston b. 11/22/1885 in Radnor,
Wayne Co., West Virginia, son of Dennis Preston and Elizabeth Copley. Charles married
Gypsy Burgess Booth in Wayne Co. and they had two children, Dennis (Chris's wifes father),
and Fontella. Gypsy died when Dennis and Fontella were small children. Charles moved to
Sullivan Co., TN and eventually married Kate Combs. The children were raised by Gypsy's
sisters and family.
Chris has the line traced back to a Thomas Preston and Anna Pinson of Fayette Co., KY.
Thomas was supposedly the illegitimate son of an Annie Preston b. 1782, Holkes Co., NC.,
although Chris doesn't have any proof of this.
Chris wants to know more about the life of Charles Walter Preston. He believes he was
mayor in Bluff City, TN for a period and may have had a connection with the local TV
station. Charles died 11/28/1973 in either Bluff City or Bristol. Chris is also interested
in obtaining a scan or copy of a letter written by Charles Walter Preston's father, Dennis
Preston in 1885 to his neice Henrietta Nash in Provo, UT. Chris has a transcript but would
like a copy of the original letter. Any information would be appreciated. Posted 6/29/01.

Alonzo Preston. Darrel has found a George Preston father of Willie Miles Preston father of
George Miles Preston but he can't make a firm connection to his GGF George Preston. Darrel
comments that the Appleton and Miles names seem to be recurring family names. Any help
would be appreciated. Darrel does not indicate where this family lived but suppose he has
seen the data on Archibald Preston and the connection to Miles in Georgia ! Posted 6/29/01

- Sea Erwin is looking of
information about a Mark Preston. Mark Preston was a minister in Bradford Co PA from
1825-ca 1845. His wife was Amanda Avery from Groton CT. I am interested in knowing
anything about his parents and/or other background about him. I have a mysterious note in
the Preston family notes that says "was a prisoner exchange on Long Island". It
does not say Mark was the exchanged. Do you know?
It is family lore that he was related to Thomas Preston (of the Boston Massacre fame). I
have nothing but rumor to attach the two. Since Henry Mark Preston, Mark's youngest son,
was a professed Tory as late as l897, I wonder if that is a clue to Mark's past. Rabid
Tories were certainly not the fashion at that late date!
Thank you for any attention you have re this problem. Sincerely, Sea Erwin. Posted

dau. of William H. Preston from Morgan Co., Ohio. William was born ca. 1813 in Huntington

- Judy and Rob Preston are
looking for information on his great grandmother, Jane Preston. Judy and Rob are in the UK
and apparently this Jane Preston came to the United States to visit relatives and was hit
by a car dying instantly. All they have to go by is a newpaper clipping, headline,
"MET INSTANT DEATH", and below is a picture of Mrs. Jane Preston. "Run down
by auto driven by A. H. Oakes on Matherson Avenue on Saturday night." On the back of
the clipping is a partial advertisement, 'Famous from New York City to Pennsylvania
Station' & Long Island..... They don't know what newspaper, what city or the date.
From the appearance of Mrs. Jane Preston they believe her to be about 60 years old which
would make her death about 1910-1920. Jane was born in Appleby, Lincolnshire, England
4-18-1847. If anybody has a clue as to where this might be or any other information please
