Preston Bulletin Board
Current Bulletin Board, Inquiries from 2/1/2004 to 4/8/2011

I am getting a number of inquiries for help in locating Prestons. Unfortunately I can not provide much help most of the time. I am going to post inquiries on this page so that others can see them and perhaps provide some help. Also, if anyone wants to supply me with their line (PRESTONs) I will put up a page for that family. It would be nice if all the different lines could be linked, and perhaps someday most of them will. You can send me your inquiries by email at fpreston@suddenlink.net. If you do not want your inquiry posted, please tell me. If anyone can help, either contact me, Fred Preston, or contact the person entering the query. Actually, you could contact both of us that way I can enter the line on this page. If any of the people requesting information get help from this page I would like to know. You cannot post inquiries yourself, send them to me via email and I will post it.

  1. Checked 22 email links on 3/19/2011. Found 11 no good. Did a one line strike through on the name but left name and email address there. Had one AOL that checked bad but put a question mark because I frequently have trouble with AOL email addresses.
  2. Albert Gordon was trying to tie a Sophronia Preston to an established line. Sophronia was born ca.1817 in New York, believed to be in western NY, like Chautaqua Co. She married Joseph S. Kean ca.1835 probably in or near Crawford Co., PA. First son was Samuel A. Kean.

I have some information about their descendants. Joseph S. Kean and Sophronia Preston had four children, David  Kean, Samuel Kean, who married Anna, Mary Kean and Joseph Kean.

David Kean and Samuel Kean were both bankers and real Estate developers in early Chicago. David  Kean, of Rodgers Park, IL married Eliza Pratt and they had three children, Ralph  Kean, who married Leota Mae.Ellison in Berrien county, Michigan, Mabel who died at age 7 and Hugh Kean.  Eliza, Ralph and Hugh were all teachers or administrators in the Illinois school system.

My great aunt Leota Ellison and Ralph D. Kean lived in Berrien County, MI, where his parents eventually moved, then moved to Illinois.  Anyone can contact me about these folks at suewylan@gmail.com

  3. My name is Stephanie Callahan (Chapman). I am inquiring about Prestons in the Greene County IL area. The Preston line comes from my father's side of the family. His name is Stephen Lance Chapman. His mother is Delta Chapman (Preston) married to Thomas Chapman. Delta's father was Harry Albert Preston (d. May 1988) married to Florence Alberta Shipley (d. November 2006).  Delta had at least one sister who died several years ago from cancer.   Harry's father was James Edwin Preston.
This is as much as I know about my grandmother's side of the family. Unfortunately, Delta did not know much about her grandparents and Grandma Preston is no longer here to ask. A portion of my family still resides in IL (mostly Greene Co).
I am trying to trace the family back 1) because I want to know where I came from and 2) because there is supposed to be ties to American Indians on both Harry and Florence's families. Old stories state that there is lineage to Chief Black Foot.
If anyone has information that could help me, I would very much appreciate it. I am sorry I haven't any dates, but I am just starting out with trying to find out who my family is.
I may be reached at Marlex97@aol.com
    Thank you,

J & A Hayn is looking for information on a James B. Preston son of James and Silence (Chamberlain) Preston. He was born in Trenton, NJ and moved to Indiana and then to St. Louis, MO. In 1943 the family moved to Morgan Co., IL. James was born on October 12 or 26, 1826 (Trenton, NJ), married Margaret Ruyle and James died on August 22, 1901. James and Margaret had 16 children. Any help appreciated. Posted 1/28/2001.

(Posted 2/6/2009) I am a daughter of Jennie & Javan Long's daughter Mary Long Leamons. Jennie's father was Jamed Edward/Edwin Preston and his father was James W. Preston and his father was James B. Preston. I have info re him as follows. I have down to my own family - but not in family tree form, just like below.&nbs! p; If this helps - if you haven't already found what you need, and you want the rest, I'll send.

I have information that Margaret divorced James B. after having 16 children and married a Ben Whitehead, but can't find info on him/her after her divorce.

My grandmother and older aunts always told a story about Grandma and Grandpa Jimmy - Prestons I believe - owning a store at a place once called Ceres IL. He ran the store and she was a midwife and medicine woman and supposedly a full-blooded Indian (tribe unknown). I cannot figure out which grandmother this would be as Margaret Ruyle has family tree info back some ways. Their son James Woodmancy married an Isibelle J. Whitlock, but she also has family tree info and does not include Indian info. Grandma said she was her Grandma or Gr Grandma Jimmy.

If you have any info, please share.

JAMES H. PRESTON, a son of James and Silence (Chamberlain) Preston, was born in Trenton, N.J., Oct. 12, 1826. When he was nine years of age his parents removed to Indiana, and five years later to St. Louis, Mo. Thence, three years later, to Morgan County, Ill., where James resided 15 years. He then removed to Athensville township, this county, and bought land on section 8, where he now lives, engaged in farming. He enlisted in the service of his country, Aug. 6, 1862, in Co. A, under Capt. B. LaSage. His enlistment was for a term of three years, but, May 25, 1864, he received a wound in the right thigh, which disabled him, and he was honorably discharged. He has never recovered from his wound, and is not able to do manual labor. He now receives a small pension, but has applied for an increase, and it will be no more than justi! ce that the department should allow his claim. He followed engineering on the Mississippi for some 15 years. James Preston and Margaret Ruyle were married May 7, 1848. She was a daughter of John and Anna (Gilpin) Ruyle. Sixteen children have been born to them - James W., Joseph A., John W., William R., Margaret E., Sarah A., Thomas B., Wesley E., all , living; Gabriel, Charles Edward, Silence Ann, and Rachel E., are deceased, also, four died in infancy. He owns a small farm on section 8, where he now resides. In politics, he is a republican, and is also a member of the United Baptist church. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilmaga/greene/1885bios/prestonjas.html

  6. I am seeking the parents of Elizabeth Preston, b abt 1813 in Vermont and married Alonzo Rice Taylor in 1837/1838 in Wallingford , Vermont. They had 5 known children and maybe a 6th, named Mary Jane, who went to live with her uncle Timothy Taylor in 1854. She (Mary Jane) was age 16 in the N.Y. 1860 census. Elizabeth and Alonzo were last listed in the 1850 Wallingford, Vt. census with their 5 children. In 1860, the children are living with various families in the area, and the parents are missing. No record of their where-abouts has ever been located. Any assistance in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated. Fred Taylor FTAYLOR@TRITON.NET or tel: 231 854 4063 Posted 1/7/08

  11. I am searching for any information about A. J. Preston from Knoxville, Tennessee who finished third in an automobile race at Cincinnati, Ohio on June 15, 1930. Mr. Preston also entered a car in the 1935 Indianapolis "500" known as the Preston Special but the car did not achieve enough speed in qualifying to start in that race. On August 30, 1936, A. J. Preston entered his "Preston Hispano" racing car in a race at Hammond, Indiana. If you know anything more about this A. J. Preston, please contact Bob Lawrence

  13. Hopefully you can post the little information I have and with some luck a connection may be made. My name is William Albert Preston originally from Pittsburgh, PA. I was born there on 5 Nov 38 and resided in the same household with my Grandfather & Grandmother. My Dad's name was William Clarence Preston and he was born May 1917. His father was William Clarence Preston Sr., originally from the Philadelphia area we believe. Not too many family members left and those that are left knew very little about my grandfather. Evidently he was a adventurous wandering type person. It was rumored he attended some college in the Philadelphia area with the intent to go on to medical school but ended up working on a ship and went to sea. Lived in various cities during his lifetime.
I believe he passed away in 1945 at the age of 86. My Grandmother's maiden name was Anna Powell Bubenheim, Powell being her previous husband's name and Bubenheim her family name. My father was their only child.
I currently live in Spring Hill, FL.

  19. I am looking for the ancestors of our John Preston. John was probably born between 1740 and 1750 and died cir. 1823 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Some say he came from County Meath, Ireland. John Preston may have been a son of the John Preston whose will was probated in 1801 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Unfortunately, this John Preston only states that his estate is to be sold and divided among my children, except my daughter, Jane, whose part to go to her son, William, which I have hitherto raised. There is a John Preston who appears in the Tax Books of Lincoln County, Kentucky as early as 1789. Then William Preston, John Preston, Jr., Daniel Preston and Moses Preston appeared in the Tax Books of Lincoln County, Kentucky. By 1805, John Preston, Enoch Preston, Toliver Preston and Jilson Preston appeared on the Tax Books in Garrard County, Kentucky. In 1807, there is also a Jeremiah Preston on the Tax Books. By 1820, Jilson Preston, Toliver Preston and Lewis Preston appear on the Jessamine County, Kentucky Tax Books. Then in 1821, William Preston appears on the Tax Books of Jessamine County, Kentucky. 28. Jenny Preston Young from South Africa sent this email in 2001, better late than never. She states that her Grandfather was John (Jack) Walter Preston b.1893 in Plymouth, Dorst, UK. Her grandmother was Daisy Holyer. Her father was John Holyer Preston born in Portsmouth on 8/24/1925 and died 12/12/1996.. Her father, John Holyer Preston served in the Royal Navy in WWII and her grandfather served in WWI and possibly also in WWII. To confuse matters, Jenny remembers her grandmother mentioned that the family name was changed from Burke or Cronin, she's not sure how far back or why. Jenny herself was born in Cape Town in 1957. She has an older sister Lorna b.1955 and a younger sister b.1961 and a brother, Timothy John Walter Preston b.1958. All born in South Africa. 29. My name is John Preston, one of many of my line, and I live in Rockport, Ma. Born in Beverly, Ma. I am retired and decided to do my thing thru a Gen. club here in town. I've hit a snag and need your help. So here we go. It seems my line runs thru Adam Preston/Isabel Braithwaite. They had a son William, b.1590/1, Giggleswick, County York Married 1.) Elizabeth Sale 2.)Mary Seabrooke b.1601.Embarked to Boston aboard the "Truelove" in 1635, with his four youngest children by his first wife. John being only 3yrs old at the time and the one I am interested in. Apparently settled in Dorchester, Ma and to New Haven, Conn. where his father William was one of the original settlers. In any event, John, the youngest by all accounts, left the New Haven area and went to Saco Maine. Now married to Jeanne------ according to The New Hampshire Historical Society in Concord, he appears upon the scene in April 1681. He now has a son William who died abt. 1718, who was married to Priscilla Randall, who had a son William b.1704/5, lived in Beverly, Ma, and moved to Chester, NH. etc etc. MY problem is that on the Roger Preston side shows Samuel Preston married to Susannah Gutterson in 1672 and having a son William b1674, died 1718 and also married to Priscilla Randall So I show John, from Saco Me. as the father of William not Samuel. Any ideas? Thank you....
