Levi left home September 27, 1862 at the age of 17 to join the 22nd Regiment of the Virginia Cavalry and fought in the Civil War for eighteen months. He fought at Charlotteville and Jordanville. After the war was over and he had agreed not to take up arms against the U.S. Government, he went home to become a farmer. On Saturdays he was often seen riding his horse into town, dressed in his Confederate uniform. In his Obituary he is remembered as a general funmaker who dearly loved a joke. He was perhaps the last Confederate soldier in Braxton County.
