Jane Preston
1781- 4/24/1863of Walnut Grove Prestons
Jane Preston, daughter of Robert Preston (1750-1833) and Margaret Rhea (1757-1822)UNKNOWN, married Robert Preston's adopted son, Robert Preston Jr. (Irish Bob) (1772 - 9/9/1858). They
were married on April 12, 1798. Robert Preston Sr. gave them a large farm and home which
they called "Locust Glen" in Washington County Virginia. They organized and were
active in the Spring Creek Presbyterian Church. Letters have been found by Robert Coontz,
Jr. which indicate that Robert Preston was the son of James Preston and Sarah Gilliland
and the grandson of James Preston, Sr. James Preston was related to Robert Preston, Sr.
but not yet sure of the relationship. Robert (Irish Bob) came to this country with Samuel
Preston, another cousin, in July 1793. Apparently, Robert's name was Robert Preston
before being adopted and called Robert Preston, Jr. Irish Bob would have
been 21 and Samuel 18 at the time. Samuel was the son of Thomas and Nancy Preston, again,
not sure of the connection in Ireland.
They had six children:
I copied the Land Grant for the plot of land which I assume was for their home, 'Locust Glen'. The script was not like I show it, many of the s's look like f . The word lesser might be lefser. I thought the description was interesting, using the trees as land marks, and poles as measures. A 'pole' is the same as a 'rod' and is equal to 5.5 yards or 16.5 feet. See DOCUMENTS for other land grants, letters etc.
