PORTSMOUTH - Harvey B. Eure Jr., 81, died in a local hospital Friday, March 2, 2001. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard Safety Division. Mr. Eure was a lifetime member of Cottage Place United Methodist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Eure is survived by his wife of 63 years,
Grace Dougherty Eure; a daughter, Carolyn Eure Brice and her husband, John K. Brice; a son, Thomas M. Eure and wife, Jo Ann Owens Eure, all of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, John Kyle Brice Jr., Jennifer Brice Williams and husband, Rob Williams, Edwin Brantley Eure, Tammy Jo Ella Eure and her fiance, Randy Oliver; two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Alana Williams; two adopted great-grandchildren, Justin and C hris Oliver and many other loved family and friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cottage Place United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lynne Hundley with burial in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Cottage Place United Methodist Church. The family will be hosting a reception in the Fellowship Hall of her church after the graveside service.

GATESVILLE - John Riddick Eure Jr., 78, a native of Gates County, died March 12, 2001, in his home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gatesville United Methodist Church, Gatesville by the Revs. William Clements and Gene Asbill. Burial will be in Gatesville Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the church.
Eure had retired in 1984 from Union Camp Corp., now International Paper, after 26 years of employment. He was a member of Gatesville United Methodist Church, the Gatesville Hunt Club, the Nixon's Ditch Boat Club, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Beaman Eure; three daughters, Kathy Eure of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Sarah Artz of Cary and Barbara Wiat of Bunker Hill, W. Va.; two sons, Paul Eure of Bunker Hill and Charles Eure of Gatesville; two sisters, Emma Lee White of Franklin, Va., and Gladys Stallings of Hobbsville, one brother,
W. H. "Bill" Eure Sr. of Gatesville; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

EURE - Bessie Felton Eure, 87, a native of Gates County, died March 19, 2001, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie. She was the widow of Jessie L. Clay and Gurney G. Eure.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Edge and the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Mrs. Eure was a homemaker and a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church. She was also a member of Gates County No. 335, The Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a sister, Lillian E. Taylor and a brother, L. Z. Felton, both of Eure; a stepdaughter Rebecca E. Eure of Gatesville; and several step-grandchildren.

R. Beatrice Eure Spivey
TUNIS -R. Beatrice Eure Spivey, 87, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Spivey was born in Hertford County and was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. She was a 1937 graduate of Chowan College. Mrs. Spivey was a retired bookkeeper for Whitlock-Dunn in Portsmouth, Va., and also Shoup Boat Company in Ahoskie.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lou Spivey Newsome of Winton, NC and Dolores Spivey Matthews of Ahoskie, NC; two sons, Warren Carnice Spivey, Jr. of Chuckatuck, VA and Dan Fleetwood Spivey of Winton, NC; two sisters, Evelyn Eure Harrell of Gatesville, NC and Janice Eure Hughes of Portsmouth, VA; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, John A. Eure.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Gilbert Crawford and the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom. Burial will follow in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Edna E. Barrett
SEDLEY - Edna Eure Barrett, 87, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at her daughter's home in Franklin. She was born Nov. 21, 1913, in Surry County to the late Junius Edward Eure and Marjorie Elizabeth Warren Eure. Mrs. Barrett was a lifelong member of Wakefield Baptist Church and the widow of Al B. Barrett.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Buhls; granddaughter, Melissa Leigh Buhls; great-granddaughter, Alexis Brown, all of Franklin; and her sister, Alma E. Drewry of Waverly. Mrs. Barrett was predeceased by her brothers and a sister, Mills Eure, Mary Emma Cox, William Eure, James H. Eure and Charles T. Eure.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Purvivance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by Dr. William L. Hales. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at Mrs. Barrett's home, 27003 Barrett's Church Road, Sedley. Samuel L. Eure Sr
YORKTOWN- Col. Samuel "Sam" Lee Eure Sr., 67, passed away July 5, 2001, in a local hospital.
He was born July 2, 1934, in Gates County, N.C., to the late Maxton and Lillie Eure. He retired from the U.S. Army after 30 years of service, including service in Vietnam.
He was an active member of the Fort Eustis Chapel where he was a lay reader and a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Eure was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Beta Lamda Alpha Chapter. Following his military career, he retired from the Science and Technology Corporation, Hampton, as senior vice-president.
Besides his parents, Mr. Eure was preceded in death by his sister, Effie Rogers. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Vernell Brown Eure; two children, Samuel Lee Eure Jr. and his wife, Tascha, of Yorktown and Karen Eure Wilson and her husband, Louie, of Ahoskie; six grandchildren, Crystal, Sam III, Preston, Ariel, Joseph and Kalynne; a brother, Dr. Albert S. Eure and his wife, Delores, of Portsmouth; a brother-in-law, Anthony Rogers and a niece, Antoinette Rogers, both of Richmond; an uncle, Melvin Boone and his wife Ruth, of Suffolk; as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel. Fraternal rites by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity will take place at noon. A funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the chapel by Chaplain (Col.) Terry Dempsey. Interment with military honors will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Mildred P. Eure
ROCKY MOUNT- Mildred Parker Eure, 54, of Rocky Mount and formerly of Roduco, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001.
She was the daughter of the late Charles Riddick Eure and Ernestine Parker Eure of Roduco. After graduating from Gatesville High School, she attended Chowan College and was a graduate in X-ray Technology from Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount where she worked in the X-ray department for a number of years.
She is survived by her brother and his wife, Allan and Susan Eure of Raleigh, N.C.; her niece, Hadley Eure of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a nephew, Charles Eure of Raleigh.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Presley. Interment will follow at the Ahoskie Cemetery. Harrell Funeral Home, Gatesville, is handling arrangements.

L. Hunter Eure
EURE- Lankford Hunter Eure, 85, a native of Gates, died Jan. 21, 2002, at Down East Health and Rehab, Gatesville. He was the widower of
Ruby Joyner Eure.
A funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. January 24, 2002 at Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Hayes and the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Masonic rites were accorded by Gatesville Lodge. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Eure retired from the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Va., as an aircraft mechanic and a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church and its Adult Sunday School Class and Gatesville Mason Lodge #126. He was also a member of the Hall Ruritan Club, and the Gatesville Senior Citzens. He had served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Linda Eure Carter of Sunbury and Elaine Eure Driggins of Eure; three sisters, Mecie Byrum of Corapeake, Lillian Taylor and Linda "Sugar" Eure, both of Eure; and a granddaughter.

Belle B. Eure
PORTSMOUTH-- Belle B. Eure, widow of Mills R. Eure, slipped quietly from this life June 30, 2002, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Virginia Beach. Before moving to the nursing home, she lived her entire adult life in Portsmouth. She was born in 1911 in Perquimans County, N.C.
She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne Aucion and her husband James Aucoin. She was predeceased by her son, Robert Eure, who is survived by his wife Doris Eure. Belle Eure is also survived by her grandchildren Robbie Eure and Deedee Nutt and her family.
In addition, she is survived by her brother Mack Lane and his wife Velma Lane of Hertford, N.C., and a stepbrother and his wife, George and Ethel Davis.
For many years, Belle was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Chesapeake. She was a past matron of Fellowship Chapter 140, OES, and a past guardian of Bethel 40, IOJD.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Ted David. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, with an Eastern Star service starting at 7 p.m.

John D. Eure
SUFFOLK -- John Dalton Eure passed away peacefully early February 9, 2004, at Lake Prince Center. He was born Oct. 17, 1910, in Gates County, N.C., the son of Linwood G. Eure and
Mary J. Felton Eure.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Finn Holland Eure; sons, John D. Eure Jr and wife Mary Ann, Hugh L. Eure and wife Robin and Douglas L. Eure, all of Suffolk; and grandchildren, Ann Dalton Eure Brown and husband Dr. Robert Brent Brown of Greenville, N.C., David D. Eure and wife Monica H. Eure of Suffolk, Bellamy Finn Eure of Philadelphia, Pa., and Hugh L. Eure Jr. of Suffolk. In recent months, he was delighted by the news of the birth of great-grandchildren, Robert Dalton Brown and Veronica Caroline Eure.
Of the eight siblings, John D. Eure was the sole survivor, having been predeceased by Noreen E. Mitchell, James S. Eure, Essie E. Jernigan, Nathaniel L. Eure, Linwood Eure, Pocahontas E. Rose and Bonnie E. Williams.
Known to his friends as "John D." he served in World War II as a naval flight instructor, returning to Suffolk to found and operate Peanut City Airport where many area residents took their first airplane ride or learned to fly. He later operated Portsmouth Airport (now Hampton Roads Airport) and was instrumental in having Nansemond County erect the first permanent hangars at Suffolk Municipal Airport. In 1938, he flew the first (and thus far the only) airmail from Suffolk, landing at Norfolk Municipal Airport as the first plane to land there. He reenacted the flight to celebrate his 80th birthday in 1990, flying a Stearman biplace.
He was past chairman of the Board of Directors of Central Fidelity Bank's Suffolk Board (now Wachovia), being the successor to American Bank & Trust Co. where he worked as a teller prior to World War II. In 1942, he earned his Real Estate broker's license and later formed Eure Real Estate Inc. which continues as Suffolk's oldest Real Estate firm.
He was a member of Suffolk Elk's Lodge 685, Suffolk Lions Club for more than 60 years, American Legion Post 57, and a past deacon of Suffolk Christian Church, where he was a lifelong member.
The family will meet friends at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. today where a funeral will be held by the Rev. Michael Halley at 2 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Suffolk Christian Church Memorial Fund or Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad.

Sue Stublen Eure
WILLIAMSBURG -- Sue Stublen Eure, 70, peacefully departed this life March 25, 2004. Sue, a native of Portsmouth, is survived by her husband of 52 years, William L. Eure; her four children, W. Bradford Eure and his wife Christine of Charlottesville, Va., C. Wesley Eure and his wife Laura B. of Williamsburg, Pamela E. Heinz of Chester, Va., Melinda E. Pilcher and her husband Edwin D. of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren, Coleson, Tyler, Clayton and Madison Eure of Charlottesville, Ryan and Logan Eure of Williamsburg, Carly and Anna Heinz of Chester. Mrs. Eure is also survived by two brothers, William S. Stublen Jr. and wife Dorothy B. of Portsmouth, Robert B. Stublen and wife Sue T. of Portsmouth; and two sisters, Anne S. Young and husband W.C. of Madison, Miss., and Sandra S. Shelton of Richmond; and many nieces and nephews. Sue's parents, William S. Stublen and Annie B. Stublen; her sister, June S. Livermon and husband, Wilford W. formerly of Portsmouth, predeceased her.
Sue was the co-founder of Eure Communications Inc. Operators of Commercial Band Radio Stations, with her husband and served as secretary/treasurer from 1970 until 2000. In addition to her corporate responsibilities, she served as controller and office manager of WXEZ-FM until her retirement from day-to-day activity in 2000. Sue's integrity and conscientious dedication to principled business practices was a positive example to all having contact with her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister to all she leaves behind. Sue's natural dignity, humility, love and genuine Christian concern for her family and friends will remain an inspiration.
A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Bruton Parish Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Williamsburg branch of the Alzheimer's Association, 263 McLaws Circle, Suite 203, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

William Eure
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - William Pollard Eure, 79, a native of Gates County, died October 23, 2004, in Norfolk.
A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Eure Christian Church, Gatesville, by the Rev. Wayne Gardener. Interment was in the Eure Christian Church Cemetery. Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Great Bridge Chapel, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, was in charge. Friends are invited to sign the register book and send condolences at www.omanfh.com .
Eure was retired from the Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Board. He was a member of Eure Christian Church in Eure, N.C. He was also a member of the Grassfield Ruritan Club, Gates County Hunt Club and the White Oat Hunt Club.
Survivors include his wife, Emily Doughtie Eure of Chesapeake; his daughter, Marie Eure Beliles of Chesapeake; his son, Arthur Riddick Eure of Portsmouth; three sisters, Bessie Mae Butt, Sally Johnson and Ann Terrell; a brother, Jimmy Eure; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lloyd A. Eure
EURE - Lloyd Alvin Eure, 77, of Highway 158 West, died Wednesday, October 19, 2005 in Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA.
Mr. Eure was born in Gates County, a son of the late Oscar and
Mae Greene Eure, and was a member of Eure Christian Church. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Gatesville Ruritan Club, the Gates County Hunt Club and the White Oak Hunt Club.
Survivors include his daughters, Dawn Eure of Edenton and LuLu Eure of Eure; a sister, Celia Foutz of Eure, and his dogs, Murphy and Knuckles.
Besides his wife, Frances C. Eure, who preceded him in death on October 5, he was predeceased by sisters Venelle Mize, Grizelle Eason, Kathleen Turner, Evie Howell; and brothers, Robert Eure, Raleigh Eure, Cecil Eure and Woodie Eure.
A graveside service was held on Saturday, October, 22, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Eure Christian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Gardner and Rev. Mike Brinkley, officiating. The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday and other times at the home of his daughter in Eure. Stephen E. Eure Jr.
WINDSOR - Stephen Edward Eure Jr. of the 25400 block of Walters Hwy. passed away Nov. 28, 2005.
A native of Gatesville, N.C., he was the son of the late S. E. Eure Sr. and
Evelyn White Eure. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He was a former employee with Leggett's department store and Colonial Store of Suffolk. He was also employed for 12 years at the Newport News Shipyard and later became self-employed in antique furniture refinishing and restoration. Mr. Eure was a member of Colosse Baptist Church.
he will be sadly missed by his wife of more than 50 years, Helen Carr Eure; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Gwen Lassiter of Gatesville; a nephew, H. J. Whitley Jr. of Windsor; a special great-niece, Beth Whitley Hughes and great-great-niece, Heather Lynn Hughes, both of Virginia Beach.
A funeral wil lbe held Friday at 2 p.m. at Colosse Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Webb officiating. Entombment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Harrell & Hill Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 25427 Walters Hwy., Windsor, VA 23487.

GATES - Helen Felton Eure, a native of Gates County, died there April 24, 2006. She was the widow of S. Timothy Eure.
Mrs. Eure was a member of Eure Christian Church, a homemaker, she and Tim owned and operated Eure's Brown Eggs.
Survivors include her son, Raeford Eure; a brother, Stanley Felton of Chesapeake, Va.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A funeral was conducted Thursday in Eure Christian Church, Hwy. 137, Eure, NC 27935, by the Rev. Michael Brinkley and the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Eastern Star rites was accorded in the church and burial followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church. Thamar H. Eure
RODUCO - Thamar Howell Eure, 90, a native of Gates County, died May 13, 2006, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Gordon Holland Eure.
Mrs. Eure was a retired seamstress, she had worked at both Don Juan Mfg. in Hertford and the Ahoskie Sewing Factory. She attended Eure Baptist Church and in 2005 received the Longest Survivor Award from the local Relay for Life chapter.
Survivors include her son, Gordon Eldridge Eure of Eure; Zuni, Va.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted Tuesday in Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Proctor. Burial was in the Ahoskie Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Relay for Life.

George T. Eure
NORFOLK - George Thomas Eure, 90, of Spotswood Avenue, died June 27, 2006, surrounded by his family. He was born June 25, 1916, in Hertford, N.C. He was predeceased by all of his siblings. Mr. Eure retired from Dominion Virginia Power in 1974, after 33 years of dedicated service.
Tommy was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Known as a man who loved every minute of his life, he always had a positive attitude.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Moss Eure; daughter, Camilla Eure Goldman and her husband Charles Milton Goldman; his granddaughter, Mason Leigh Goldman; daughter, Jennie Eure Cavender and her husband William Dempsey Cavender and his granddaughter, Kelly Moss Cavender. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Berea Church of Christ, Hertford, followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall.

Mary F. Eure
SUFFOLK - Mary Finn Holland Eure died Sept. 3, 2006, at the age of 92. A native of Suffolk, she was the widow of
John D. Eure and the daughter of the late Luella Finn and Hugh L. Holland. Mrs. Eure was also preceded in death by her brother, Hugh L. Holland Jr.
"Mary Finn" as she was known to friends, was a graduate of Suffolk High School and attended Sweet Briar College and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She loved the piano and organ. She was the past president of the Suffolk PTA and Riverview Garden Club and was a member of many other civic and social organizations. Mrs. Eure was devoted member of St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church where she played the organ in years past.
Survivors include her sons, John D. Eure Jr. and wife Mary Ann, Hugh L. Eure and wife Robin and Douglas L. Eure; grandchildren, Ann Dalton Eure Brown and husband Brent, David Debnam Eure and wife Monica, Bellamy Finn Eure and Hugh L. Eure Jr.; great-grandchildren, Robert Dalton Brown, Veronica Caroline Eure and Mary Jacquelyn Brown, Elizabeth Rebecca Brown; sister-in-law, Esther Jett Holland; and many nieces and nephews.

EURE - Shirlie Doughtie Eure Pope, 75, a native of Gates County, died October 5, 2006, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville. She was the widow of her first husband,
Raleigh McKinley "Gramps" Eure.
Mrs. Pope was the retired co-owner and operator of Tar Heel Bar-B-Q, she was a member of Eure Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert H. "Bob" Pope; threee daughters, Jackie Cozart of Raleigh, Polly Mitchell and Paige Hedgepeth, both of Eure; two sisters, Emily Eure of Chesapeake and Erma Lee Eure of Eure; a brother, William Thomas "Sonny" Doughtie of Eure; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lena Ellen P. Eure
HARRELLSVILLE - Lena Ellen Piland Eure, 75, of the 200 Block of Pawnee Road, known to family and friends as "Na Na", peacefully succumbed, Thursday, August 23, 2007, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital with her immediate family and the loving, caring nurses and physicians of the intensive care unit by her side. She was the widow of
Dewey Carter Eure.
A native of Hertford County, she was a homemaker known for her spirited nature, making anyone in her company smile with her positive outlook, wit, and love of God, life, family, and friends.
So dear to her family, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was the "baby" of eleven children born to the late William Stephen and Cora Lena Eure Piland. She was a member of Harrellsville Baptist Church.
Survivors include her only daughter, Shelia Eure Stallings and her husband, Ronnie of the home; three grandchildren, Nichole Stallings Eure and husband, Raymond, Dewey Stallings and wife, Jennifer, all of Harrellsville, and Stacy Stallings Rooker and husband, Jon, of Sanford, NC; three great grandchildren, Carter Stallings Eure, Lindsey Nicole Stallings, and Owen Dewey Stallings. Her only surviving sibling is a very dear and loving sister, Annie Piland Mathias and husband, Thomas of Winton.
Lena Ellen leaves a family and a host of dear friends to cherish the wonderful years they shared together, remembering her love for them as they too loved her so deeply and the dignity she possessed as she bravely lived with Muscular Dystrophy. Her heart was always filled with admiration, love, and trust for dear friend and physician, Charles J. Sawyer, MD, whom she and her family cherished deeply for the years of medical care, compassion, and encouragement he gave her.
A graveside celebration of life service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2007, at the Harrellsville Cemetery with the Rev. Hugh Mizelle and the Rev. Gilbert Crawford officiating. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and also at the home following the service. Garrett Funeral Home is serving the Eure family.

Darden C. Eure
EURE - Darden Clifton "Dink" Eure, 81, a native of Gates County, died September 6, 2007, in Down East Health & Rehab, Gatesville.
Eure was a retired book binder in the U.S. Government Printing Office, he had also worked at Teagle and Little in Norfolk. A member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, he was an Army veteran of World War II, had served in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Kick of California and Jackie Warren of Utah; two sons, Robert Daniel "Danny" Eure of Eure and Darden C. Eure of Indonesia; three sisters,
Jennie Parker of Gates, Lois Neal of Portsmouth and Phyllis Anderson of Newport News; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Stephen Early Eure, 86, a native of Eure, died July 6, 2008, in a Suffolk nursing home. He was widower of Melba Oden Eure and second to
Abbie C. Eure.
Eure retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a naval architect technician. He was a deacon at Court Street Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice E. Koziol of Virginia Beach and Sallie E. Redding of Pittsboro; four sisters, Maggie E. Tinkham, Garnett E. Hudgins and Omah E. Harrell, all of Eure and Bobbie E. Cowan of Suffolk; one brother, Andrew Q. Eure of Williamston; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

May Johnson Eure Harvey
May Johnson Eure Harvey, widow of Charles Wesley Harvey, Jr. died Wednesday, April 1, 2009. A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. James S. Kohler amd the Rev. Wanda Neely. Pallbearers will be former students of Mrs. Harvey. Burial will follow in Ayden Cemetery.
Mrs. Harvey was the daughter of James Bruce and Mary May Johnson Eure and the granddaughter of Robert Luther and Mary Murphy May Johnson, whom she called Mama and Pop. They were like a second set of parents to her. A native of Ayden, she was a graduate of Ayden High School, where she served as President of her senior class and as a cheerleader. She received both her undergraduate and masters degrees in Elementary Education from East Carolina College. Her teaching career included two years in Lenoir County and twenty-six years in Pitt County. She served as president of the Pitt County Association of Educators and of the Northeastern district of the North Carolina Association of Educators.
As a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, May held many positions in the Women of the Church, where she was awarded an Honorary Life Membership. She was Circle Leader, taught Bible Study, and was program chairman and historian. She also taught the Harvey-Webb Sunday school class, served on the nomination committee for officers and prepared the Sacraments for many years.
The Greenville Service League was another passion of Mrs. Harvey's. Her special love was the layette project, where she served as chairman, and made thousands of hand embroidered items for worthy babies in Pitt County. She did this as long as her vision allowed. She served the League in many ways but especially as Projects and Hospital activities chairman, Secretary, Vice-President and President. Mrs. Harvey and her daughter, Mary Wesley, are the only mother-daughter pair to have each served as President and Charity Ball chairman.
Mrs. Harvey was an avid bridge player in the Tuesday and Thursday clubs and felt this competition helped to sharpen her mind. She was also a member of the Inter Se Book club where she served as librarian and secretary. She was a member and President of the German Club, a long time member of the Greenville Golf and Country Club and enjoyed preparing her famous chocolate pies for many occasions. She enjoyed many happy years with her grand-dogs Fergie, Gidget and Wyneston.
Mrs. Harvey is survived by her devoted, loving and caring daughter, Mary Wesley Harvey; and brother, James Bobby Eure and wife, Martha Jane, of Wilmington.
The family will receive friends Saturday 12:30 p.m. until the funeral hour at the church.

GATES - Titus L. Eure, 80, of US Highway 13 North, Gates, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at his residence.
He was retired from Planters Peanut Co. Suffolk, VA, and a lifelong member of Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Chairman Deacon for over 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Eure of the home; one daughter, Celeste M. Eure of Columbia, SC; one son, Floyd E. Eure of Gates; four stepsons, Randy Williams and Reginald Williams, both of Gates, Hardy Williams of Gatesville and Wayne Williams of Morrisville; three sisters, Rose Martin of Atlanta, GA, Selma McEachin of Garner and Arlene Mabry of Hackensack, NJ; four brothers, Bennie Eure of New York, NY, Lee Edward Eure of Mt. Olive, Roosevelt Eure of Portsmouth, VA and Henderson Eure Jr. of Gates; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral was conducted on Saturday April 4 at Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Bryan Johnson. Burial was in the Eure Family Cemetery, Gates.

Sandra Schwab
GATES - Sandra Faye Eure Schwab, 63, of the 200 block of Rooks Road, died Saturday evening, May 23, 2009, in Sentara Obici Hospital.
A native of Portsmouth, Mrs. Schwab was a homemaker. She was the wife of John Carroll Schwab and the daughter of Faye Booth Eure of Portsmouth and the late Vernon Roscoe Eure. She was a member of Eure Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Eastern Star Chapter 337. She volunteered in the school system and was a Cub Scout Den mother and a member of the Gates County Rescue Squad Auxiliary. She took anyone in trouble into her home for a meal or place to sleep.
Besides her husband and mother, survivors include: two sons, John Carroll "J.J." Schwab Jr. of Gates and Paul Vernon Schwab of Greenville, N.C.; a granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Schwab of Eure; two sisters, Nancy Eure Ward of Gates and Kim Eure Morris of Corapeake; a brother, Vernon Ray "Butch" Eure of Portsmouth; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Eure Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Gardner officiating. The family will receive friends at home and asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Gates County Volunteer Rescue Squad, 16 U.S. Hwy. 158 E., Gates, N.C. 27937.

PORTSMOUTH - Ardelle Griffin Eure, 88, went to be with the Lord June 26, 2009. Mrs. Eure was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, a graduate of Wilson High School, Class of 1937-1/2, and a lifelong member of Park View Baptist Church.
She was the daughter of James and Ella Morris Griffin and was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Woodard E. "Country" Eure Sr. Surviving Mrs. Eure are her children: daughters, Pam Rhodes of Roanoke and Betty Ann Powell of Chesapeake; her sons, W. E. "Bud" Eure Jr. and his wife Rebecca of Portsmouth and Jim Eure of Richmond; five grandchildren, Dawn Eure Hanks and her husband Jason, Patrick Rhodes, Timothy Daniel Eure, Amy Rhodes and Lucas Powell; and two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Zachary Hawks. Also surviving Mrs. Eure are her cousins, Nell Gates of Norfolk, Leon Morris and wife Syble of Portsmouth, and Erika Lexow of Berlin, Germany, and her special friend, Frank Ragland.

HARRELLSVILLE - Dorothy Felton Eure, 82, of the 300 block of Pawnee Road, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, N.C.
Mrs. Eure was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late Ed N. and Utha Lilley Felton. Retired from Alamac Material Factory in Ahoskie, she was a member of Eure Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Dalton Felton.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, Barry and Janet Eure of Suffolk, Terry and Judy Eure of Gatesville, and Marty and Sharon Eure of Harrellsville; five grandchildren, Allen Eure, Miles Eure, Jeff Eure and wife Dawn, Travis Eure and wife Nicole, and Brent Taylor and wife Melissa; four great-grandchildren, Cadence and Evan Eure and Courtney and Cameron Taylor; and her longtime companion, Don Morgan of Harrellsville.

GATES - Virginia Eure "Jennie" Parker, 76, of US 13 North, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 in her home.
A native of Gates County, she was a homemaker and a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda P. Rose of Gates, Nita Parker of Clayton and Annette Askew of Eure; a son, Herbert Murray "Bert" Parker Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Lois Neal of Portsmouth, VA and Phyllis Anderson of Newport News, VA; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 1 at Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Revs. Todd Higginson, Billy Presley and Wayne Gardner. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, handling arrangements.
Friends may join the family at the residence.

Henry Eure
GATESVILLE - William Henry Eure Jr., 50, of Academy Street, Gatesville, died Thursday, October 29, 2009 in his home.
A native of Gates County and the son of
William H. "Bill" Eure Sr. and Ellen Owens Eure of Gatesville, he was a loader operator in logging. He was a member of Gatesville United Methodist Church, the Gatesville Hunt Club, and the Gatesville Volunteer Fire Dept.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Patty Lister Eure; two sons, Ben Eure and Jerry Eure; and a step-daughter, Kristen Derrickson, all of Gatesville; and his sister, Alta Eure Blowe and husband, Randy, of Cofield.
A memorial service was held Nov. 1 at Gatesville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tracy Clayton and the Rev. Gene Asbill. A private committal will be held at a later time. Friends may join the family at the residence.

Mecie E. Byrum
CORAPEAKE - Mecie Eure Byrum, 90, of Middle Swamp Road, Corapeake, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at Down East Health & Rehab, Gatesville.
A native of Gates County, she was a homemaker and a member of Middle Swamp Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Billy Byrum of Sunbury; two sisters, Linda Eure and Lillian Taylor, both of Eure; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A funeral was held on Thursday, Nov. 19 at Middle Swamp Baptist Church with the Rev. Burt Pearce officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence.

William H. Eure Sr.
GATESVILLE - William Henry Eure, Sr., 78, of Edmond Street, Gatesville, died Thursday, January 21, 2010, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
Born in Gates County, his employment included the Roll Finishing Department at Union Camp Corp., serving as the Gates County Sheriff, and then returning to Union Camp in the security division before retirement.
He was a member of Gatesville United Methodist Church and Post 712 of the VFW. Eure also served in the US Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Owens Eure; a daughter, Alta E. Blowe of Cofield; a sister, Gladys Stallings of Hobbsville; four grandchildren; and a step-granddaughter.
A funeral was held on Friday, Jan. 22 at Gatesville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tracy Clayton officiating. Burial followed in the Gatesvile Cemetery.
