CYCLONE IN GATES COUNTY
CARRYING DEATH IN ITS PATH -- HOUSES SWEPT AWAY -- THE INJURED.
...
Mrs. Riddick Eure, who has been reported ill for a long time died last Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock. She leaves a husband and six children (three grown and three small ones) and a host of friends to mourn their loss.
On last Thursday morning a terrible cyclone passed through the neighborhood near here in which Mr. W. R. Umphlet lives, sweeping away buildings and killing a 15 months old child of Mr. Umphlet. It seems to have been more severe at Mr. Umphlet's than anywhere else, as it swept away every building on his premises, and the escape of his whole family from instant death is almost miraculous. The dwelling house was blown almost into splinter wood and Mrs. Umphlet's fifteen months old baby was killed in her arms by a piece of scantling striking it on the head, knocking a hole in its skull large enough to put a hen egg in. "It breathed its last sweet breath" in its mother's arms in about three minutes after the accident occurred. Mr. Umphlet was thrown to the floor by a large piece of timber falling on him and remained there senseless until his wife removed the timber from off his head. He has been tenderly cared for, but has been unable to leave his room since. His oldest son received a severe wound on the face, and all the other members of the family received slight injuries. Many people from here and other places have visited the scene of the sad occurrence and report that nothing like it has ever been heard of in Gates county before.

2. That we extend our heartfelt love and sympathy to her loved ones, and as she prayed in her hours of suffering, we pray also that they seek comfort with the Savior.

Born June 3, 1933 in Ashland Kentucky, she is the daughter of the late Chauncey Eaton Forgey and Joyce Evangeline Heinzen and the wife of the late Thad Eure, Jr. Alice and her husband Thad were co-founders of The Angus Barn Restaurant. Together they also founded the Darryl's restaurant chain, 42nd Street Oyster Bar, Fat Daddy's and the Border Cafe.
In addition to a thriving restaurant career, Alice was also a gifted decorator. Alice and her former partner, Stewart Woodard, co-owned Stewart Woodward Galleries for 10 years. They were the talent behind the unique design and decor of all the Eure restaurants as well as many landmark homes and businesses in Raleigh.
She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was the recent recipient of the UNC School of Medicine's Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her contribution to the understanding of mental illness, her service to humanity and her courage in the face of personal adversity. Alice was also a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary's College and served on the Board of Directors of Wachovia Bank, The North Carolina Restaurant Association, and Raleigh's Bicentennial Committee.
However, Alice's most caring and innovative work was formalized in 1984 with the establishment of the Foundation of Hope, for research and treatment of mental illness. Under Thad and Alice's guidance the Foundation of Hope has provided more than $1,000,000.00 in start up funding for a large number of mental health research projects at the UNC School of Medicine and Dorthea Dix Hospital. It is precisely because of the Eure's courageous efforts that there is a greater understanding of mental illnesses and eff ective treatments for these psychological disorders. Alice was also an avid animal rights advocate and supporter of local SPCA's.
Surviving are her three children, Thad J. Eure, Shelley Eure Belk and Van Eure; her mother, Joyce E. Heinzen; only grandchild, Thaddus Roy Eure; her sister, Gwen Forgey Chamberlain and her brother, Ben F. Forgey.

Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street, 828-4311.
[elsewhere in the same paper was an -In Memory Of- article on Mrs. Eure. It indicates that Shelley Eure Belk and Van Eure were her daughters, and includes the following paragraph on her husband's death]
When her husband died of cancer in 1988, he left one of the largest estates ever filed in Wake County, at $13.5 million.
On the first anniversary of her husband's death, 200 restaurant employees staged a walkathon to raise money for the Foundation of Hope, a charity that the Eures had set up in 1984 to benifit mental illness. The next year, the walk was opened to the public and has remained a popular event.
