Hays Family Tree

(Hay, Hays, Hayes)

The original name of this clan was HAY. They came from Scotland to Ireland probably around 1610 or slightly later. They went from Creeslough to Dunfanaghy. The Hay homestead is about three miles out of Dunfanaghy on the road to Horn Head Point. This is about 30 miles west northwest of Londonderry. Three sons of William John Hay, Sr and his wife Martha came to America in 1854. William J. Hay, Robert Hay and Frederick Hay and their families changed their name to Hays, except part of Robert Hay's family changed their name to Hayes. Some clan members went to New York and remained Hay. (Hay existed in Scotland, Hay and Hayes existed in Ireland but Hays was only found in this country.

William J. Hays and his wife Letitia (Morrow) Hays came to this country about 1854 and settled on a farm in Madison township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania where William J. Hays followed agricultural pursuits and ran a distillery.

Origin of the name Hay is Scottish, from the word haga or later haia meaning hedge. Reference source is Burke's "General Armory" 471b. Leith 1685. The coat of arms is Blazon, Argent, three escutcheons gules each charged with a garb or banded gules. Crest, an ox's head couped proper, Motto, Nec Abest Jugum meaning, "There is always some yoke".
