  • History
Under the guidance and direction of Don Fritz, former Director of Alterative Programs for Caddo Parish schools,  a long-held dream of Principal Margaret Brown came to fruition. Ms. Brown has always wanted her own staff of psychologists to assist in her work with area youths.

Ms. Brown sought assistance from the medical and mental health communities of the Shreveport/Bossier area. With the assistance of long-time friend Dr. Terry Davis, Professor of Psychology at LSUHSC, she was able to forge an alliance with Paul Ware, MD and his staff, and through this relationship the school added two full-time school psychologists, Mrs. Henrietta Davis, MS, NCSP and Mr. M.E. Mellinger, MS, CSP, to work with the students, parents, and staff of Oak Terrace/J.B. Harville Alternative Center. When the programs of Oak Terrace were relocated to the Academic Recovery and Career Discovery Center, the Student Services Department and the Mental Health Center were combined to form the Center for Academic and Behavioral Assistance.

Davis and Mellinger view their services as a social systems approach involving student, school, family, and community resources. They are available to provide individual, group, and family counseling, clinical casework services for a broad range of psychiatric disorders, psycho-educational support services, psychological assessments, and assistance in creating plans for therapeutic and emergency crisis interventions.

Students may obtain services through referrals from themselves, parents, or staff on the Mental Health Referral Form available in the Center for Academic and Behavioral Assistance in room B5.
