![]() It was the soul, the very soul of Oak Terrace/J.B. Harville Alternative School that called us to being a Goals 2000 School. We are the school with the special children. Those with the children growing inside of them. Pregnant middle and high school girls. Those who've been thrown out for acts of violence. Words that should never have been spoken and fists that slew too quickly in rage and sadness. We are the school with the special children. The ones you look away from, whose arems and legs are twisted. Whose bodies don't do what they're supposed to and whose minds are not as bright as we would hope. Whose challenge it is to walk of feed themselves. Who call us to care for them all the days of their lives. Yes, we are the school with the special children, but we love them. Know this my friend, we chose this school and these children. We understand that we are called to righteousness and justice. We know that we must treat our students as if they were our very own children. And those that scream and yell, we hold close, until the anger is gone. Those that struggle to walk, we stand nearby with our arms outstretched, encouraging them to fly. We who work with special children understand what it is to have a vision. We have discovered a sacred secret. That we are nurtured; our souls are nurtured by acts of giving. Yes, we have a vision of our special school and our special children, and we pray moment by moment and one by one, arm in arm. We will recreate our school, transform our corner of the universe in a haven of learning and caring and excellence for our very special children. -Sandy Cahn, 1996 |
