Student Awards Assembly Recognizes Academics, Athletics, Attendance, and Behavior

Nearly one quarter of the students of the Academic Recovery and Career Discovery Center were recognized during the annual Student Awards Assembly. Members of the ARCDC golf team were recognized for their participation in the ground-breaking partnership with Shreveport Country Club. Silver level award winners received new pairs of Adidas sneakers along with prize bags. Gold level award winners received prize bags with their prizes included. Pastor Rick Layton of Word of Faith Church International, the primary sponsor of the program, was on hand to congratulate the winners.

Pi Day is a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi). You have probably heard about π before. Maybe your teacher was talking about it. Maybe you saw it in your math book. Maybe you saw it on television or in a movie. You have heard of it, but do you really know what π is?

C-SPAN's 2012 Cities Tour Visits ARCDC

On Tuesday, February 7, ARCDC hosted C-SPAN Local Content Vehicle producers Debbie Lamb and Tiffany Rocque. As part of C-SPAN's 2012 Cities Tour stop in Shreveport, Lamb spoke with students about careers in broadcast and video journalism as well as the mission of the C-SPAN networks and the importance of being informed about current events in an unbiased way. She also demonstrated the use of C-SPAN's Video Library to find video clips about a wide variety of topics.

Achievement Rewards Program Kicks Off to Reward Hard Working Students

ARCDC Embraces African American Culture and History

On Monday, February 27, 2012, ARCDC hosted its annual Black History Celebration entitled "Embracing African American Culture and History." The month-long focus on African-American contributions throughout the history of the United States reminds us that no matter what our situation, we can always bring ourselves up by helping to bring others up.

ARCDC Buffalo Soldiers Win Library's Drama Contest

Ms. Shirley Culbert's fourth grade class has been named the winner of the All the World's a Stage drama competition hosted by the ARCDC Library. Teachers and Students were asked to choose a brief scene from a book they had read, write a script, and submit a video recording of their performance.

ARCDC Students Participate in Golf Program

Some Connections Program students from the Academic Recovery and Career Discovery Center are receiving the opportunity to participate in golf lessons at the Shreveport Country Club. The lessons are being taught by Club Golf Pro Martin Stewart, Club Assistant Golf Pro Marty Stewart, and Mr. Bobby Brown, who has worked and trained with a number of professional golfers.

ARCDC Celebrates Black History Month 2012
February 2012
February was chosen for Black History Month because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. However, February has much more that Douglass and Lincoln to show for its significance in black American history. On February 1st, 1960, a group of black Greensboro, North Carolina, college students began a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter… kicking off a range of sit-ins that would define the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's.

2011 Deck the Halls Contest Winner Announced

The Academic Recovery and Career Discovery Center Library Media Center would like to congratulate Ms. Rubben's first period class on winning the annual door-decorating contest. Doors had to reflect this year's library theme, "the Wonderful World of Reading."

ARCDC Library Hosts "Once Upon a Time... Computer Style"

The Academic Recovery and Career Discovery Center Library Media Center would like to congratulate the winner of the Once Upon a Time...Computer Style Contest, 6th grade student Quatravious Williams. Quantravious' original digital story, entitled "Losing Someone Close," earned his class a party and he received a framed certificate.

ARCDC Honors Our Veterans with Special Luncheon

Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day that America has set aside to honor American military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in combat. That's not quite true. Memorial Day is set aside to honor America's war dead. Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors all American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their dedicated and loyal service to their country.

ARCDC Faculty and Staff Participate in Character Day to Promote Reading

The faculty and staff were invited to participate in a Character Day on Friday, October 28 by the library to promote reading. To participate, they chose their favorite book character, dressed like them, and brought along a copy of the book so they could tell the story of their character.

ARCDC Library Announces Winner of Annual Poetry Contest

The Academic Recovery and Career Discovery Center Library Media Center would like to congratulate the winner of this year's poetry contest, 7th grade student Tearrica Moore. Tearrica's original poem, entitled "Where do you find a blessing?" earned her $25 and a certificate. Thanks to all the participants.

High School Exam Schedules Announced

All high school classes are required to give a semester exam and to follow the schedule below. In keeping with the Pupil Progression Plan, the semester exams are to count 15% of the semester grade.

If we've learned anything this month, we've learned that these great men and women are not only pioneers in black history, but indeed pioneers in American history. Their stories have taught us, have challenged us, and have helped us grow this entire month. Another thing we have learned is that black history and American history is within us, for in every student at this school lies potential for greatness.

On October 8, Eric Carle's book The Very Hungry Caterpillar was read to young children all over the world, including the elementary students at ARCDC. Students also discussed the life-cycle of a caterpillar and designed their own butterflies.
